FC Belize & BDF lead BPFL football

[Linked Image] FC Belize and the Belize Defence Force are both undefeated in Week 4 of the 2010 Belize Premier Football League tournament, each posting 10 pts from 3 wins and a draw to lead the competition.

FC Belize posted their 3rd win by upsetting the up-to-then undefeated Griga United 1-0 at the MCC grounds on Sunday afternoon. Christian Okonkwo and Gilroy "Bredda" Thurton led the City boys' offensive, backed up by Shaun Gill and Delwyn Jones on the wings and midfielders Jarret Davis and Brian Martinez.

Griga United's defensive line-up of Karim Peters with the help of Allan Flores, Gilbert "Hoof" Swazo and Jacinto Bermudez asked no quarter, nor gave none, and the City boys squad came up empty for a nil-zip ball game at the half.

Griga's Alex Peters, Lisbey Castillo, Dennis Serano and Kareem Haylock displayed great ball control and had more ball possession, but it counted for nought. The pressure of their attacks brought out the best in FC Belize defensive lineup of team captain Eian Gaynair, Albert Thurton, Leon Cadle and Byron Usher, who helped goalkeeper Eldon Linares keep the visitors off the scoreboard throughout the 1st half.

Delroy "Thinman" Andrews and Jerome "Jaro" James entered the ball game in the 2nd half, for Delwyn Jones and Gilroy Thurton, while the visitors also refreshed their attack formation with Dion Burgess and Lennox "Nambule" Mejia replacing Lloyd Nunez and Alex Peters.

Things looked black for FC Belize when the referee issued Brian Martinez his 2nd yellow card of the ball game, and Martinez was sent off reducing the city squad to 10 players.

The undefeated Belize Defence Force suffered their first setback when they drew 1-1 with Belmopan Blaze last Saturday night. Denmark Casey struck first for the BDF in the 56th minute, but Christopher Hendricks equalized for Belmopan Blaze in the 88th minute.

The Toledo Ambassadors are in 4th place in the standings with 7 pts after their 2nd win: 3-0 over the winless San Pedro Sea Dogs at the Ambergris Stadium on Sunday. Andres Makin scored the first and winning goal in the 12th minute of play to lead 1-zip at the half. Ralph Flores added a 2nd goal in the 81st minute before the long whistle, and Bernard Linarez delivered a 3rd goal in the 87th minute.

San Felipe Barcelona celebrated their 2nd back to back win, a 2-1 victory over the winless Hankook Verdes at the People's Stadium on Sunday. Deris Benavides had scored San Felipe's 1st goal in the 6th minutes of play, but Verdes' Jose Monroy almost immediately delivered the equalizer in the 7th minute. Harvey Cruz scored the game winner in the 44th minute, and the San Felipe defense locked up shop to hold on to their 2-1 lead until the long whistle.

Verdes will host Griga United at the Marshalleck Stadium on Saturday night; San Pedro Sea Dogs hosts Belmopan Blaze at the Ambergris Stadium on Sunday; FC Belize will take on the San Felipe Barcelona at the Peoples Stadium; and the BDF host the Toledo Ambassadors at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio on Sunday.

BDF & FC Belize rule BPFL football

[Linked Image] The Belize Defence Force and FC Belize are both undefeated and leading the Belize Premier Football League competition. FC Belize drilled San Felipe Barcelona 3-1 in Week 5 of the tournament at the People's Stadium on Saturday night, and the BDF blasting the Toledo Ambassadors 4-3 at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio on Sunday, October 10.

The Belize Defence Force came back from being down 2-0 deficit to win by an injury time goal from Erwin "Bird" Flores in the 93rd minute.

Ashley Torres scored Toledo Ambassadors' first goal in the 7th minute of play and Bernard Linares embarrassed the BDF goalie with Ambassadors' 2nd goal in the 44th minute to lead 2-0 at the half.

Paul Nunez scored the BDF's first goal in the 47th minute, and Evan Mariano delivered the equalizer in the 67th minute.

Even though Ashley Torres completed the hat trick with a 3rd goal for the Ambassadors, the "Man of the Match" BDF's Erwin "Bird" Flores came off the bench to notch his team's tying and 3rd goal in the 87th minute to tie the ball game at 3-3. The Bird then wielded the dagger and drove it into the hearts of the Ambassadors' fans when he scored the game winner 6 minutes later in injury time. The Ambassadors are ranked 4th with seven points.

In Saturday night's big match up, Nigerian import Christian Okonkwo and Jarret Davis led the potent FC Belize offense, supported by midfielders Shaun Gill, Delwyn and Brian Martinez, but a stiff San Felipe defense held off their attacks for most of the first half until Davis was able to break through and score in the 42nd minute, for a 1-0 lead at the half time break.

The San Felipe squad fought to equalize in the 2nd half, but Christian Okonkwo scored a 2nd goal in the 61st minute.

Oscar Ascevedo scored a consolation goal for San Felipe in the 86th minute, but Okonkwo blasted in his 2nd goal in injury time for the 3-1 win. San Felipe Barcelona is now ranked 5th with 6pts.

Griga United is No.3 in the rankings with 10pts after a nil-zip draw with Hankook Verdes at the Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Veijo on Saturday night. Verdes now has only 3pts and are only one rung above the cellar dwellers, San Pedro Sea Dogs, on ladder of the rankings.

Belmopan Blaze enjoyed their first win, a 3-0 triumph over the winless San Pedro Sea Dogs at the Ambergris Stadium on Sunday. Mark Leslie scored the winning goal in the 34th minute for a 1-0 lead at the half. Bertram Bermudez scored the 2nd goal in the 82nd minute and Leon "Lem" Jones added a 3rd goal in the 89th minute for the 3-0 win.

The competition continues with Belmopan Blaze hosting San Felipe Barcelona at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium on Saturday night, while Hankook Verdes look forward to their fist win as they await the hapless San Pedro Sea Dogs at the Marshalleck Stadium also on Saturday night.

Toledo Ambassadors will be hunting their third win when they take on F.C. Belize at Punta Gorda's Union Field on Sunday, while Griga United will be challenged by the Belize Defence Force at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Grigadang on Sunday.

BDF sole leaders in BPFL Caribbean Motors Cup Tourney

[Linked Image] The Belize Premier Football League Caribbean Motors Cup Competition continued over the weekend with four games across the country. On Saturday October 16, at the Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo, the home team Hankook Verdes picked up an easy win over the San Pedro Seas Dogs via the default route. The score stands 3-0 in favour of the Hankook Verdes Team.
Meanwhile, at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan, the visiting San Felipe Barcelona and the home team Belmopan Blaze played to a 1-1 draw. The home team Belmopan Blaze got on the scoreboard first when Christopher Hendricks scored the 1st goal of the game in the 22nd minute of play to give his team an early 1-0 lead.

The defence of the Belmopan Blaze was able to stifle the offense of the San Felipe Barcelona for the entire first half of the game. At the end of the first half the game ended 1-0 in favour of the home Belmopan Blaze. The second half of the game started out the way it ended in the first half with the Belmopan Blaze defense playing a major role in keeping the San Felipe Barcelona at bay. However, the visiting San Felipe Barcelona was finally able to get on the scoreboard when Everardo Cruz scored the equalizing goal in the 78th minute of play.

On Sunday October 17, at the Toledo Union Field in Punta Gorda Town, the visiting F.C. Belize and the home team Toledo Ambassadors played to a 0-0 draw. Meanwhile, at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga Town, the defending champion and the current leaders in this year's competition the Belize Defence Force humbled the host team Griga United by the score of 2-0. The Belize Defence Force got on the scoreboard in the opening minutes of the game when Evan Mariano scored his team's 1st goal in the 7th minute of play to give his team the lead.

That lead was further extended when Richard Jimenez scored his team's second and final goal of the game in the 92nd minute of play for the big win. With that win, the Belize Defence Force now sits at the top of the Caribbean Motors Cup Competition all by itself.

BDF drills Griga United 2-0 to lead BPFL football

[Linked Image] Undefeated Belize Defence Force continues to lead the Belize Premier Football League in their sixth week of competition after their fifth victory: 2-0 over Griga United at the Carl Ramos Stadium this Sunday afternoon, October 17.

A scant seven minutes of play had elapsed when Evan Mariano stunned the Griga goalkeeper Elias Pelayo by scoring the winning goal. The Griga eleven struggled to equalize but the hometown fans had little to cheer about as first intermission came and went, and then the end of 90 minutes regulation time, without the Griga strikers making any impression on the tenacious BDF defense.

The game was into its second minute of injury time, when Orlando "Lichy" Jimenez iced the victory with a second goal for the 2-0 final score. Griga is ranked third with 10pts.

FC Belize fell to second place in the league rankings with 14pts, when they fell short of a victory in a dissatisfying scoreless draw with the Toledo ambassadors at the Toledo Union Field. Their star striker Jerome James was also ejected from the ballgame with a red card, which means, James will have to sit out their next match when they take on league leading BDF at the MCC grounds on Sunday, October 24.

Toledo Ambassadors remain at fourth place in the standings with eight points, and will challenge Griga United at the Carl Ramos Stadium on Sunday.

Hankook Verdes picked up their first win by default when the San Pedro Sea Dogs forfeited their scheduled match on Saturday night. Verdes will visit Belmopan Blaze at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium, while San Felipe Barcelona will host the San Pedro Sea dogs at the People's Stadium on Sunday.

Belize Defence Force opens lead in Caribbean Motors Cup tourney

The Belize Premier Football League Caribbean Motors Cup Competition continued over the weekend with games across the country. On Saturday October 30, at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan City, the home team Belmopan Blaze picked up its second win of this year's campaign when it defeated Hankook Verdes by the score of 2-0.

The Belmopan Blaze got on the scoreboard when Leon Jones scored the first of two goals in the 26th minute of play to give his team an early lead in the game. That lead was further extended when Jones scored his second and final goal of the game in the 32nd minute of play for the victory. On Sunday October 31, 2010, in the game out at the People's Stadium in Orange Walk Town, the home team San Felipe Barcelona defeated the San Pedro Sea Dogs by the score of 3 to 2.

The home team San Felipe Barcelona got on the scoreboard first when Erick Rodriguez scored the 1st goal of the game in the 2nd minute of play to give his team an early 1-0 lead. That lead was short lived when Hipolito Andrade's own goal in the 18th minute of play tied the score at 1-1 for the visiting San Pedro Sea dogs. However, Andrade redeemed himself when he scored San Felipe Barcelona's go-ahead goal in the 38th minute of play. The first half of the game ended 2-1 in favour of the San Felipe Barcelona.

In the second half of the game, the San Felipe Barcelona offence continued on its on-slaught of the San Pedro Sea Dogs defence which allowed Luis Acevedo to score his team's 3rd and final goal of the game in the 49th minute of play. The San Pedro Sea Dogs offence replied with a goal of its own when Kenny Witzil scored in the 67th minute of play.

Meanwhile, at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, the Belize Defence Force maintained its top billing when it defeated F.C. Belize by the score of 2 to 1. The Belize Defence Force got on the scoreboard when David Trapp scored his team's 1st goal in the 31st minute of play for a 1-0 lead. It was not until the closing minutes of the game that the visiting F.C. Belize was able to get on the scoreboard when Christian Okonkwo scored his team's only goal in the 80th minute of play to tie the score at 1-1.

The Belize Defence Force's final goal was scored by Daniel Jimenez in the 93rd minute of play that gave the Belize Defence Force the 2-1 victory and a clear lead in this year's competition.

San Felipe Barcelona drills San Pedro Seadogs 3-2 in BPFL football

[Linked Image] San Felipe Barcelona now ranks 3rd in the Belize Premier Football League after they posted their 3rd win 3-2 against the cellar dwellers, the San Pedro Sea Dogs, in Week 7 of the BPFL competition at the People's Stadium in Orange Walk on Sunday.

Oscar Acevedo and Everardo Cruz led the San Felipe attacks with the help of Jaziz Wicab and Eduardo Morales on the wings, and the Sea Dogs defenders Jason Sutherland, Melvin Jonse and Thomas Baptist tried to keep them in check. But when the ball rebounded back out to Honduran import Erick Rodriguez, he wasted no time in blasting it back in and the Sea Dogs' goalie Richard Mckoy had no chance as the San Felipe squad led 1-zip in the 2nd minute of the ball game.
The Sea Dogs counterattacked, with Kenny "Maestro" Witzil, Leoli Jurado, Francisco Noralez and Hector Hernandez making little impression on the San Felipe defenders led by team captain Jose Luis Cawich, Hipolito Andrade, Joel Padron and Luis Acevedo.

The Sea Dogs' dogged persistence finally paid off in the 18th minute when Leoli Jurado blasted in a shot that deflected off Hipolito Andrade and into goal to tie the ball game at 1-1.
Angel Cantun entered the ball game to relieve Jurado and the fire went out of the Sea Dogs' attack. Hipolito Andrade gave the San Felipe squad a 2-1 lead when he connected with an aerial pass from Oscar Acevedo to embarrass goalie Mckoy for a 2nd time as the San Felipe squad secured their 2-1 lead up to the half time break.

The Sea Dogs pressed for the equalizer in the 2nd half, and the pressure of midfielders Kent Gabourel, Melvin Almendarez and Delmar Valladarez's attacks caused Jose Cawich to goof with a foul that got him sent off the pitch.

This left the San Felipe squad playing with only 10 men but they were still dangerous as Oscar Acevedo proved when he razzle-dazzled his way through the Sea Dogs' defenders to embarrass Mckoy a 3rd time to lead 3-1 in the 49th minute.
Sea Dogs' coach Hugo Pineda introduced Abimael "Chino" Trejo and Christian Rivero to the ball game, relieving Melvin Almendarez and Francisco Noralez, and Kenny Witzil penetrated the San Felipe defence to blast a 2nd goal past goalie Bryan Hernandez in the 65th minute of play.

The Sea Dogs now sought to equalize and salvage a draw out of the jaws of defeat, but it was not to be. Hernandez stopped 3 shots on goal in quick fire succession to shut them out and secure the 3-2 win at the long whistle.

The undefeated Belize Defence Force continues to lead the competition with 19pts, after posting their 6th win: 2-1 against FC Belize at the Norman Broaster Stadium on Sunday. David Trapp scored the BDF's first goal in the 31st minute of play to lead 1-0 at the half time break, but FC Belize's Nigerian import Christian Okonkwo delivered the equalizer in the 80th minute. It fell to Danny Jimenez to score the game winner in the 93rd minute. FC Belize remains in the No.2 spot in the league rankings with 14 pts from 4 wins and 2 draws.

The Belmopan Blaze posted their 2nd win to move up to No.5 with 8pts above Toledo Ambassadors after Leon "Lem" Jones drilled Hankook Verdes 2-0 in the 26th and 32nd minutes at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan on Saturday night.

This weekend Verdes host Toledo Ambassadors at the Marshalleck "Cancha" on Saturday night, FC Belize visits the Sea Dogs at the Ambergris Stadium, San Felipe hosts Belmopan Blaze at the People's Stadium and the BDF will host the Griga United at the Norman Broaster Stadium.

At the end of another weekend of football in the BPFL Caribbean Motors Cup competition, defending champion Belize Defence Force remains undefeated at the top of the standings, while San Pedro Sea Dogs maintain a perfect 0-8 record with 0 points at the bottom of the standings.

Out west at the Norman Broaster Stadium yesterday, home standing BDF held on to their top ranking, but it was another close encounter that could have gone either way. A blessing for the army may have been the none-appearance of the red hot Deon Burgess in the visiting Griga United lineup on Sunday. Deon had just scored both Griga goals on Thursday night in their 2-1 win over a game Toledo Ambassadors. In that game, Deon put Griga in front at the 33rd minute; Evaristo Nunez equalized for Toledo at the 61st, but Deon struck again at the 70th minute to break the tie and gain the victory for Griga. Yesterday at the Norman Broaster, the tie remained 0-0 through regulation in a keenly contested match that saw some impressive goalkeeping from Griga's Elias Pelayo who aggressively came out to deny successive attempts at goal from BDF's Evan Mariano, Daniel Jimenez and Richard Jimenez. Alexander Peters probably had the best opportunity for Griga against BDF's Woodrow West in goal, but his shot from the right side went wide on the outside of the net.

Both teams played good defense, but failed to capitalize at the other end. Fans nevertheless enjoyed the match, and, along with both teams, were full of praise afterwards for referee Gerald Henry, who, in one vocal fan's opinion, did the best piece of officiating for as long as anyone can remember; and no cards were issued between the same two teams, who, only a couple weeks earlier in Dangriga, had some wondering if they were watching a game of "pitti pat". Assistant referees in yesterday's match were Earl Trapp and Javier Torres; and the 4th official was Rojelio Escobar. According to match commisioner, FFB vice-president David Jones, all four officials are from the Cayo District. Gerald Henry and Earl Trapp are FIFA certified.

One further note on this match: Both Erwin "Bird" Flores and Khalil Velasquez, key defenders for BDF, had to leave the game with injuries. If they are not ready for next week, BDF will be vulnerable.

Meanwhile, out at Ambergris Stadium, it was more pain and suffering for San Pedro fans, as the visiting F.C. Belize showed no mercy to their hosts, drilling the Sea Dogs, 4-1, with goals from Delroy Andrews (30 min), Byron Usher (40 & 85 min) and Christian Okonkwo (61 min), who is now one of only two players with 5 goals to their credit. The only Sea Dogs tally was by Emory Nunez (63 min).

Also on Sunday, up north at the People's Stadium in Orange Walk, Deris "Columbia" Benavides joined the "top goleadors" list, when he increased his total to 5 with his 16th minute strike to give San Felipe Barcelona a 1-nil lead against visiting Belmopan Blaze. Harvey Cruz sealed the 2-nil victory for San Felipe with his goal at the 71st minute.

Saturday night at the Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo, home standing Hankook Verdes came up empty again in their search for that first victory. Verdes defense has been solid so far, giving up 9 goals in 8 games played; but they have only managed to score 7, and not when they needed them most. On Saturday, Verdes failed to score for the fourth time this season, and found themselves 1-nil victims of visiting Toledo Ambassadors, whose winning goal came at the 65th minute from Jeremy Bermudez.

Six games remain before the top-4 playoffs, and while things are looking dim for Verdes, only the Sea Dogs are resigned to play only the role of "spoiler" the rest of the way. While some research is needed to confirm if there has ever been an undefeated team in the BPFL regular season, for sure there has never been a team that has gone "point less". If they don't give up, Sea Dogs will have their day.

Weekend Week #9 schedule:

Sunday, November 14

4:00 p.m. - Toledo Ambassadors vs Belmopan Blaze - Toledo Union Field

4:00 p.m. - Griga United vs San Felipe Barcelona - Carl Ramos Stadium

4:00 p.m. - F.C. Belize vs Hankook Verdes - MCC Grounds

4:00 p.m. - Belize Defence Force vs San Pedro Sea Dogs - Norman Broaster Stadium

Byron Usher scored FC Belize's final goal of the game in the 85th minute of play for the 4-1 victory. At the People's Stadium in Orange Walk Town, San Felipe Barcelona defeated the visiting Belmopan Blaze by the score of 2 to 0.

The home team San Felipe Barcelona's 1st goal was scored by Deris Benavides in the 16th minute of play to give his team an early lead. In fact, that was the only goal that was really needed in this game. San Felipe's 2nd and final goal was scored by Harvey Cruz in the 71st minute of play to give his team the 2-0 victory. In the final game of the day played at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, the defending champion and the current leaders in the competition, the Belize Defence Force and Griga United played to a 0-0 draw.

The Belize Premier Football League Caribbean Motors Cup Tournament continued over the last week of play. On Saturday November 13, at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga Town, Griga United and the visiting San Felipe Barcelona played to a 1-1 draw. The home team, Griga United got on the scoreboard first when Alexander Peters scored the 1st goal of the game in the 3rd minute of play to give his team an early 1-0 lead.

However, that lead was short lived as San Felipe Barcelona came roaring back when Oscar Acevedo scored the equalizing goal in the 32nd minute of play. At the sound of the long whistle the game ended in a virtual 1-1 draw. On Sunday November 14, at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, the defending champion and current leaders in this year's competition the Belize Defence Force blasted the San Pedro Sea Dogs by the score of 7 to 0.

The Belize Defence Force got on the scoreboard when Paul Nuez scored the 1st goal of the game in the 14th minute of play to give his team an early lead. The lead was further increased when Evan Mariano scored the 1st of his two goals in the 33rd minute of play for a 2-0 lead. The lead was further extended when Evan Mariano scored his 2nd goal of the game in the 46th minute of play for a 3-0 lead at the end of the first half of the game.

In the second half of the game, the offense of the Belize Defence Force picked up right where it left off in the first half of the game with its onslaught of the San Pedro Sea Dogs defence. Paul Nuez got his 2nd goal of the game in the 59th minute of play, which was then followed by Mike Cho in the 84th minute of play, followed by Daniel Jimenez in the 86th minute of play and then by Denmark Casey in the 88th minute of play.

BPFL tournament resumes with 7 teams

After the break last weekend when there were no games, the BPFL 2010 Caribbean Motors Cup tournament returns to action this Sunday with 7 teams left in the competition. San Pedro Sea Dogs has dropped out (see BPFL press release), and only 6 teams will make the playoffs, so 1 of the remaining 7 will exit at the end of regular season. With the odd number of teams, one will be idle each weekend.

With San Pedro Sea Dogs now out of the competition, after having played 2 games in the 2nd round, we took the liberty of negating the points and goals from those 2 games, the Week #8 game against F.C. Belize (F.C. won 4-1) and the Week #9 game against BDF (BDF won 7-0), since the other teams remaining in the competition will not get to play San Pedro in the 2nd round. All teams met the Sea Dogs in the 1st round. Below we have printed the standings as they would look under that scenario. Note that F.C. Belize and Belize Defence Force will therefore have played one game fewer than the other teams, with their San Pedro 2nd round games removed.

With Week #10 and Week #11 games cancelled last week, those will now be back matches, and the tournament resumes with games scheduled at Week #12.

Week 12 schedule for Sunday, November 28
4:00 p.m. - Toledo Ambassadors vs Belize Defence Force - Toledo Union Field
4:00 p.m. - Griga United vs Hankook Verdes - Carl Ramos Stadium
4:00 p.m. - F.C. Belize vs San Felipe Barcelona - MCC Grounds
(Belmopan Blaze is resting this weekend.)
