Members of the Coast Guard are heading into the channel near Ambergris Caye to rescue passengers returning to San Pedro from Chetumal, Mexico via a local water taxi company San Pedro Water Jets Express. There have been no casualties reported, and confirmed reports are simply that people are being rescued from the area where the boat ran aground.

Details will be posted as they become available.

Reports reached our office of a boat that had ran ashore around 6:30pm tonight. In our initial investigations, we were able to contact the operator of the San Pedro Water Jets express, who was confirmed that a boat belonging to his company was in fact involved in a minor accident when the boat ran into shallow waters.

No casualties were recorded. Reports are that the boat had arrived from Chetumal carrying international passengers en route to Caye Caulker. The passengers were scheduled to take a connecting boat that was leaving San Pedro en route to Belize City at 5:30pm (with a stop over in Caye Caulker).

Due to the absence of Immigration Officers at the terminal, the passengers were made to wait and they missed the final boat leaving the island. Another boat was secured, and it was this vessel that ran into shallow waters somewhere to the western part of San Pedro, around the Port area, en route to Caye Caulker.

About five boats were dispatched to the area to assist the passengers, assuring that they arrive at their destination and render assistance to the boat. Further details of this incident will be posted as they become available.

Sometimes its really 3th world, when we left for Chetumal last Christmas the immigration officer was about one hour late.

Its hard to keep a reliable water taxi service, when you have to drive a night in shallow water, because the Immigration Officer does not show up.

Next time, they should put the passengers in a Hotel and send the bill to the Immigration Office. Hope the Minister of Tourism has a close look at this incident.

Water Jet Express always provided a excellent service for my.

The guys at the shop always give me dirty looks and make snide remarks when I use the phrase 'Third World'.
Shit happens!...and it happens everywhere :-)

Not really a valid excuse for running aground as badly as they did, operating a public passenger service. Accidents happen but anyone who Captains a boat knows that is a very narrow channel with no margin for error.
