BELIZE COAST GUARD ASKS MARINERS TO BEWARE OF THIEVES

The Belize Coast Guard is asking all mariners to secure their vessels as vessel theft is on the increase. Just yesterday they recovered a stolen vessel in the Turneffe Atolls. Love News spoke with Operations Officer at the National Coast Guard Lieutenant Gregory Soberanis.

Lieutenant Gregory Soberanis; Operations Officer, National Coast Guard

"The patrol at Calabash Caye was deployed to the site where the vessel was sighted. We found a vessel belonging to Belize Academy of Diving. All navigation equipment was removed from the vessel and all mechanical equipment was removed from the vessel. The vessel was stolen about a month ago. It was towed and secured at safe harbour. It is important for mariners to be aware that vessel theft is on the increase. Over the past few months we have seen an increase in vessel theft. There are two to three incidents per month so mariners be aware, vessel owners be aware ensure that your vessel is properly secured. If you can put it on trailers that would be excellent. If it must remain in water then maintain security watch for your vessel especially at night."

Soberanis says that perpetrators often strike between 12 midnight and 6 in the morning.

Suggestions on effective locking-up methods might be appreciated posts here ---

A bolt cutter makes short work of chains, the electronic alarm cords don't last long in the salt water, and I don't think you can get a permit for a locked enclosure on your pier ....... bright lights seem ineffective as well - they just create night blindness for guards.

We're hoping a boat lift does the trick for us. It was the only solution we could think of (and we explored many!)after being twice burned.

Even a small pair of bolt cutters will walk through the toughest chain. A better thing to use is cable/wire rope. It's surely not going to stop them, but if armed only with bolt cutters it will, at least on their first attempt. Needless to say, they will most likely return with cable cutters or a portable cutting torch.

"Where there's a will, there's a way!" applies especially to thieves.

Something we use to protect our hunting camps here are motion activated lights in the area linked to audible alarms. The lights coming on seem to be a more effective deterrent than constant illumination and the alarms we use actually sound like Police sirens. laugh

We also use game cams (motion activated with stills and video) to identify the tresspassers/culprits. We have the cams covering the area we wish to protect to catch them afoot hoping for faces for positive id's, as well as having them on access/egress routes to obtain info such as tags on vehicles, make, model, color, and the same info and/or registration numbers on boats.

Hope this helps!

One of our neighbors got a cam stolen as you say, so what we did was mount them overhead....on porch overhangs, carports, and limbs in the area, and etc. Few thieves look up as their normal threats are on the ground. We've never had one go missing, as of yet, but have caught 2 sets of theives (caught and convicted) and viewed some HILARIOUS videos of prowlers when the sirens went off!

Years ago in the States I was working on a Video Surveillance team to catch who might be stealing the flowers from the downtown vases(Part of my Chamber duties) . During the review of the footage we had some great laughs of other people's behavior.....Particularly a couple of drunk guys who left a bar and tore up a wooden bus bench; then saw the cameras.....The video goes on for awhile but over the course of 2.5 hours they rebuilt the bench before daylight and it was better than new

(sorry for the hi-jack)
