We have two VERY LARGE Great Horned Owls living in the bush between Birdland, the Maya House and the beach. We not only hear them we have been able to see them. Strange - but our Osprey who were building a big nest atop the post put up by the Stiley's - out over the water - have disappeared. Some folks think the owls got the osprey. I know they can catch animals as big as cats and rabbits - but is it possible they got the osprey or maybe just scared them off.

Owls have an image that is deceptive they are though of as sitting around saying "Who" all day when in reality
they are smart, strong, stealth predictors and very successful hunters.
Its likely they ran off the competition or ate their young.
Have you found them perching in the daytime?

Yes, they have been flying from tree to tree and open enough for us to get good looks at them.
Yesterday - about 4:30 PM - three of us got close enough for one of them to watch us and we got to see him turn his head completely around. WEIRD!
I need to dig out my big lens and go hunting.

i don't know about ospreys, but my cat was attacked by either an owl or a chicken hawk...he managed to escape with puncture wounds to one of his eyes and side...he was pretty lucky that he got away...fortunately he didn't lose his eye...he hears any noise, and immediately looks up...

When I was down there a month ago I had an osprey try to build a nest on top of my 10x10 flat top bush stick sun shade. He would start in the morning and bring a wheel barrow or 2 load a day of sticks, turtle grass, plastics and anything else he thought he might need for the construction of his home. I tried to let him build the nest, he was such a beautiful bird but he was just to messy and it started blocking my roof drains. I finally had to put a flag up to evict him(tried to find a pirate one but with no luck). I hope he found a new home!

I've been wanting to erect one of those poles in the water like I've seen in Tres Cocos. Several people have made nesting platforms for them and they seem very successful in attracting nesting osprey.
