The KHMH Medical Ward - through those walls, and beds pass Belize's most unwell - and for some time, the battered ward itself had been looking sickly. But not anymore. The much trafficked area was given a face lift through a partnership between the Government and Fabrigas.

The ministry of Health donated one hundred and eighty-five thousand dollars which was coupled with Fabrigas's donation of thirty two thousand dollars. We saw what the contributions created when the ward was officially opened today:.

Dr. Gary Longsworth: CEO-KHMH
"Today we are here to mark the completion of renovations to the general medical ward, a major project which has been air mark for more than two years now when this present administration took office. This project was deem very necessary for the moral and comfort of both the hard working staff and the many patients they serve given the deplorable state of the ward but it had to await the availability of funds for its undertaking."

Those two years of waiting is finally over as today the General Medical Ward of the KHMH was officially unveiled. The work started which started in July of last year concluded in November, but as CEO of the KHMH said, it wasn't an easy job:

Dr. Gary Longsworth: CEO-KHMH
"It was a difficult job as the extent of disrepair only became fully evident as the work progress and several adjustments have to be made to ensure a satisfactory final outcome. Many walls were water damage from years of leaks through improperly fitted windows and faulty plumbing. Further once wall panels were remove Fabrigas discovered that many of the gas lines were fractured and in need of extensive repair. in response to this all windows were retrofitted, damage wall panels, ceiling and floor tiles were replaced bathrooms and offices were renovated and fans and light fixtures replaced. Wall tiles were applied thought for greater ease of cleaning and as well for a aesthetic value, following on the example of the previously renovated surgical ward. Fabrigas repaired and replaced gas lines and introduced additional lines and also standard outlets both in the general ward areas as well as the side rooms. A new safety alarm and gas shut off system which is over there was also donated and install. As a final touch a new nursing station was installed and 25 new beds were ordered and distributed throughout the ward at the completion of the project."

One of the major contributors to the renovation project was Fabrigas Belize Limited, who worked on the re-piping of the medical gases in the ward. Glenford Baptist, Sales Manager of the company told us how they got involved with the project:

Glenford Baptist: Sales Manager-Fabrigas
"In the early part of 2010 we get a letter from the Karl Heusner Hospital requesting the involvement in what they were referring to as an adopt a ward program. Fabrigas has had a relationship with the Karl Heusner as the primary supplier of medical gasses. During that relationship we have develop some knowledge, some intimacy if you will regarding the medical gas system here and after giving consideration to that request we recognize that we could make a valuable contribution by way of upgrading the central medical gas system that existed in this ward."

While the KHMH boasts a newly renovated general medical ward, it is but one of the many projects to be carried out. CEO Longsworth said that there are many more projects in the pipeline and so we can expect major development of the hospital this year:

Dr. Gary Longsworth: CEO-KHMH
"We recently launched dialysis unofficially and we plan to do an official launch on February 4th. also we are the grateful recipients of a cardiac cat lab from the Heinemann group in North Carolina and that has arrive and is being install as we speak and we will have an official opening of that unit on February 2, We are also actively working along with the first lady Mrs. Kim Simpliss Barrow on a pediatric intensive care unit project which we hope to have completed by this summer and in addition to that we have many other projects relating to improving the staff facilities and the patient facilities throughout the hospital. The major one that we hope to off the ground very shortly is the accident and emergency and asthma bay project."

The project which was completed on schedule and under budget was executed by local company- Drywall Limited

Ward at K.H.M.H. gets renovated

There is some good news coming from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Earlier today a ceremony was held to show off the newly renovated medical ward. The work started six months ago and it will provide patients with some degree of comfort in a more pleasant environment. The Ministry of Health teamed up with Belize Fabrigas to finance the refurbishments. News Five's Isani Cayetano reports.

Isani Cayetano, Reporting

Patients admitted to the KHMH will be a bit more comfortable during recovery thanks to a fully refurbished medical ward on the second floor of the hospital. The long overdue facelift was done using monies contributed by the Government of Belize and Fabrigas Ltd. to the tune of two hundred and seventeen thousand dollars. Following a lengthy bidding process the contract was awarded to Drywall Ltd. and work on the project was completed within five months. Today the newly renovated rooms were officially re-opened to the public.

"The actual work finally commenced in July 2010 and was completed on schedule and under budget in November of 2010. It was a difficult job as the extent of disrepair only became fully evident as the work progressed and several adjustments had to be made to ensure a satisfactory final outcome. Many walls were water damaged from years of leaks through improperly fitted windows and faulty plumbing. Further, once wall panels were removed Fabrigas discovered that many of the gas lines were fractured and in need of extensive repair. In response to this all windows were retrofitted, damaged wall panels, ceiling and floor tiles were replaced, bathrooms and offices were renovated and fans and light fixtures replaced. Wall tiles were applied throughout for greater ease of cleaning and as well as for their aesthetic value following on the example of the previously renovated surgical ward."

Besides the maintenance of walls and other fixtures extensive work had to be done to mend broken gas pipes which posed a potential threat to the occupants of the floor.

Dr. Gary Longsworth

"Fabrigas repaired and replaced damaged gas lines and introduced additional lines and also standardized outlets both in the general ward areas as well as the side rooms. As a final touch, sorry, a new safety alarm and gas shut off system which is over there was also donated and installed. As a final touch a new nurses station was installed and twenty-five new beds were ordered and distributed throughout the ward at the completion of the project. So finally we are here today to symbolically return the ward to its occupants who I must commend for their tolerance in coping with the constant intrusions and inconvenience over the last several months. During this time their work never stopped and the unit manager, Sister Philipa James was most cooperative and gracious even at the most difficult stages of the project. The final outcome, I believe, is a working environment that is significantly improved and of which everyone can be proud."

The donation of thirty-two thousand dollars by Fabrigas Ltd. comes as part of the company's ongoing corporate responsibility. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
