I just booked my flight to Municipal for tomorrow and was informed that tomorrow the GOB would start collecting an "airport fee' of $5 Bz on all one way and round trips out of San Pedro. It will be $5 if you buy a round trip and $5 if you buy a one way. That should spur tourism.
To the best of my knowledge there has been no publicity about this what so ever. I guess it falls in our minister's portfolio.

Evidently it is being called a "Rider's fee", as relayed to us via a Tropic e-mail.

Silly me, I though that the cost of the ticket WAS my "rider's fee."

It's my understanding that this tax will be levied on ALL flights ticketed countrywide.

Any idea where all of this new found tax $ is going to go??? I'd be curious as to how many passengers fly Tropic and Maya annually???

Well I wonder about the legality of a tax being levied with no legislation. There is usually some kind of conversation about taxes before they are enacted. It seems to have caught Maya and Tropic completely by surprise. Does anyone have any info as to the statute they are using as authority to impose this tax? Hard to believe our area rep is minister of tourism and civil aviation and tells us nothing and is certainly not representing anyone I know.

When the real estate agency business tax rate was hiked from 6% to 15% it occurred overnight without any prior knowledge within the industry stakeholders.

The current government is not capable of planning for anything. They start writing checks on Friday afternoon and realize they have no money so they levy some form of tax to cover those checks so that on Wednesday when they get cashed they can cover them.

Typical socialists except that this government is not giving anything to anyone. Not even the poor.

I will let you all know when I come up with one good thing that this government (local or national)has done.

Do you have any positive suggestions? Or do you just want to move back wherever you came from?

This charge is not being levied by the GOB it is a Belize Airports Authority charge. They now have a port fee being charged by Ports Authority in Belize.

That would seem to be a distinction without a difference since I assume they are all appointed to that authority. What about the outrageous fee we have to pay to leave? Does this mean that is going up by $5?

Really, I understand that the country of Belize belongs to the Belizeans and they can run it however they would like but frankly it reminds me of giving a bunch of 3rd graders free run to manage the classroom for the afternoon.

C'mon, it's only US$2.50 ... and, besides, some of the officials have their eyes on those newly redesigned Ford Explorers.

If Tropic and Maya had raised their tix prices by $5 no one would blink/care... Gripes, no doubt, stem from the fact we all know where the $ is going to end up.
