Darius Avila – Battle of the drums secretariat

“Andy Palacio passed away three sad years ago on January 19, 2008. It is only fitting that we recognize his contribution to our culture and our country in a small way. As such in commemoration of the third anniversary of his passing the Battle of the Drums Secretariat is organizing a memorial mass and a tribute which will be held on Wednesday January 19, 2011 in Punta Gorda Town. The mass will be spearheaded by the Peini Garifuna Choir and held at the St. Peter Claver Church commencing at 6:00 p.m. Immediately following the mass, the tribute will be held at the Father Francis Ring Parish Hall. It is being held under the theme “Remembering and honouring the legacy of Andy Palacio”. It will commence with a Mali ceremony followed by the official ceremonies, performances by various individuals and groups, reflections and video streaming portraying the life of Andy. We are asking the general public to attend and participate in the celebration of Andy’s legacy while we pay homage to our fallen Cultural Ambassador and distinguished Garifuna brother.”

Also scheduled for tomorrow is the second annual Andy Palacio lecture. Dr. Joseph Palacio will speak on the topic Andy Palacio – Globalization and Central Americanization of the Garifuna people. The lecture begins at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning at the Image Factory on North Front Street.
