I have been surfing for hours on CC and Ambergris Caye stuff to do.

I am trying to find places to go snorkeling without doing the tour. Is there any such places?

Also can anyone tell me:
- Can you visit the Bacalar Chico National Park?
- Is it worth the cost to go to turneffe Island?
- Is the San Pedro Carnival scheduled from March 8 - 11?

What I am trying to do is make the most of my two week vacation to Belize on a modest budget. I am open to most anything, with a focus on snorkeling.

Bacalar chico- If you want an inexpensive trip try to get to Tranquility bay and snorkel the park from there. $5 dollar park fee if you see the ranger.Good burgers and beer at the bar.reef is close to shore at that point and your not likely to run into a lot of tourist. Some really great snorkeling.
Turneffe trips- the dive trips don't take snorkelers and don't visit the island. They stay on board even for lunch.
Carnival- not my idea of a good time sorry, I'm to old to run through the streets half naked, drunk and painting people!..however, when i was younger

Not sure about clothing, but being splashed with paint is not optional wink

Carnival usually disappoints tourists and locals alike. Don't bother with it in San Pedro. Elbert is right.

This is a fun way to do snorkeling and tour the Island (with a guide of course) driving your own mini speedboat:
Check out all of the options. + they give you a discount if you book directly smile

In any case, you cannot miss Hol Chan for snorkeling - it is amazing!

I think thats Tranquility, it puts the reef at swim from shore distances that the rest of the island doesn't have and its in the bacalar Chico area.

Missed that they didn't want to do a tour- my bad! Another idea is to snorkel at the pier at Ramon's village. Hopefully they won't need expensive transportation to Tranquility....

We love Carnival and participate in Comparsa whenever we can. This is a traditional dance where groups of dancers dress up and compete, traveling along the streets and moving from house to house, performing for the crowds hanging out of the windows. It is an important and wonderful community celebration. Don't just be a spectator - participate and you'll find yourself amongst some wonderful people and groups who do a great deal for the San Pedro community. Here's an old blog of ours about a Carnival gone past. Carnival 2008

I agree with Collyk, lots of tourists find Carnival fun or at least amusing. It really depends on the individual but if it sounds entertaining to you, you'll probably have a blast. Many years ago when it was new to me I very much enjoyed it. Some of my best and most funny old memories in San Pedro are from Carnival.
