... had our doors open the other day. A stray cat had the guts to come into our place and pee/spray on our area rug in the living room.

Back in Canada we would easily get a neutralizer spray and then steam clean it. Here on the island... no rentable steam cleaners that I'm aware of... can't find any cat urine neutralizers... We've tried soaking it in many different cleaners, hosing it off and hanging it out.... still smells! Now, it's outside hanging in the rain with the fear of a repeat offense.

Any helpful advice before we have to throw this very nice area rug away?

Yes - at Pampered Paws they sell a product called "Nature's Miracle".

It is citrus-based and has chemical properties that neutralize urine and feces smells completely if you can thoroughly saturate the affected It works.
