In October of last year the national land use policy was introduced. The policy is expected to serve as the planning framework that will guide the country towards environmentally and socially responsible use of land resources. It is intended to put together policies dealing with forests, agriculture and human settlements in an effort to facilitate the holistic approach to development by integrating land use planning into development planning. Today representatives of various interested bodies met in Belmopan in one of a series of consultations being facilitated by team leader Jan Meerman. The objective of this consultation is to gather input involved in forest management, into the policy and to obtain a deeper understanding of the decision making process and mechanisms involved in development of land based activities. In addition, the discussions are also expected to provide the platform for information sharing to update stakeholders on progress made as the policy document is being developed.
