The issue regarding chain food restaurants isn't copyright. Copyright protects tangible expressions of ideas, for example, writing, graphic arts, music, performance.
The concern here is Trademark Law. Trademark protects brand names, logos etc. There is trademark law in Belize - I know because I registered one here. How well it is enforced is another question. In general, big companies aren't scouring tiny countries like Belize for trademark infringement which is why you see places with very familiar sounding names (there's a Circle K grocery store in Corozal, for example).
Copyright law isn't enforced which is why you see merry go rounds with Donald Duck on them and preschools with Mickey Mouse. And why you get bootleg CDs and DVDs. Given that there aren't any LEGAL ones for sale, we don't have much choice. But lack of copyright protection and questionable trademark enforcement can be a very mixed blessing.
