We've all heard about Mel Spain the politician and community activist on that island, but tonight we know about Mel Spain, the Island Verson of Annie Oakley.

Spain used deadly force with precision on Sunday morning when her son told her that her boat "How Yu Like Me Now" was being stolen. She went to the San Pablo area and saw them towing her boat away. She shot out the engine of the lead boat with her licensed 38 revolver. The 3 boat thieves took to the water, and they have all been detained by police.

Well done Mel, it's about time these criminals got caught; the number of boat thefts on this Island was getting out of control.
Perhaps the thieves will think twice before coming to Ambergris Caye to steal. I am glad that Mel took a stand against them. These people think it is OK to take what they want, with little chance of getting caught.
Citizens stand and fight back against crime.

Police detain 3 men in boat theft in San Pedro
Three men are in police custody in San Pedro as prime suspect into a boat thief on Ambergris Caye. The incident took place on Sunday morning as the trio stole the boat of a business woman. Jorge Aldana has the details in the following report.

Jorge Aldana - San Pedro Correspondent
Police has detained three persons of interest as part of a theft investigation of a vessel belongs to businesswoman Merlene "Mel" Spain. According to Police, the men are 20 year old Delnel Brown a Belizean unemployed of San Mateo Area, 27 year old Wayne Allen a Belizean self employed of a DFC Area of San Pedro Town and 31 year old Fernado Mayen, a Belizean Fisherman of a Conch Shell Bay Area in Belize City.
According to Police, investigation so far suggests that the trio were involved in the thief of a 25 horsepower engine and 16 feet skiff, namely "How Yu Like Me Now." Sometime around 3:30 on Sunday morning, police responded to reports of shots being fired and a report of thief in progress. Upon arrival in the Zaak Bajo Area in the San Juan Subdivision of San Pedro Town, they saw two boats floating in the water, one with a gunshot to the engine.
Spain told police that she was awaken by her son who informed her that someone was attempting to steal their vessel from off their dock located on the lagoon. Spain went on to tell police that she proceeded to pull out her license .38 special revolvers and fired a single shot which caught the engine of the fleeing vessel. The men then jumped out of the boat and made good their escape.
Further police investigation revealed that the get-away vessel namely "Final Destination" was registered in the name of Wayne Allen. Police later detained Allen and the two other people believe to be part of the trio that was on the boat at the time of the incident. Final Destination remains impounded at the San Pedro Police Station as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to Police, the incident on Sunday is just one of many boats that have been stolen but are later recovered without the engine. Boat owners are advice to be more cautious in protecting their vessels.

A tough and lovely lady.

Maybe Mel could help the local police force with their target practice.
