Getting to the homes in San Mateo is now a tad easier. Total road access needed in San Mateo is estimated at 1.5 mile or just over 7000 feet. On Sunday, March 13, 2011 residents of San Mateo, volunteers, San Mateo Empowerment Project (SMEP) board members, members of the San Pedro Town Council among others, gathered to celebrate the completion of the first leg of the project.
The 800 feet of road was constructed at an estimated cost of BZE$28,000.00 which was spent on materials used. The manpower needed for the construction is provided solely by residents of the immediate area as well as by volunteers. The SMEP continues to be open to financial donations for the continuation of the project.
The 800 feet of road built by the SMEP complements the road constructed by the San Pedro Town Council, which combined, allows vehicular traffic from the entrance of San Mateo to the Lagoon side of the community.
Donations may be made at the Belize Bank in the name of the San Mateo Empowering Project. Every dollar donated will help build one cubic foot of roadway. $36 will build one linear foot of road, and $108 dollars will build one linear yard of road.
