On the Belize government web site, the Environmental Impact Assessments for Bellcan's proposed developments on far North Ambergris and in Consejo are shown as not yet approved but currently under review.

If somebody wants a development site with golf course, marina and airstrip they should step up and buy Caye Chapel. All of these features are in place, were done with care, and the location is infinitely better than Consejo.

PS - about the AC development - a look at their website shows a plan that looks like one that was presented in San Pedro some time ago. The over-water rooms were a non-starter, and the balance the project was tainted by the nature of the presentation itself.

The only problem with buying Caye Chapel is a little thing called money! Don't know what the asking price is now but it's been as high as US$70 million+. That's more than the total annual gross of all the hotels and restaurants in Belize.

How many zodiacs by special delivery would it take to buy the place. Don't forget you'd get your own landing strip.

Almost two-thirds off -- what a deal!

Actually, if that $26 million is for everything -- golf course, club house, pool, villas, hotel rooms, airstrip, alligators and all the land except for the small portion that was owned separately -- it probably is a good deal.

Nothing else like it in Belize, or for that matter probably not in Central America.

There's a "jungle course" near Belmopan -- Roaring River Golf Course. Not fancy, but a nice place. 25 bucks U.S. to play 18 holes. You can rent clubs and pull carts.

It's true that folks don't come to Belize to play golf, but when it was open Caye Chapel was, if not one of the best courses in the region, certainly one of the most scenic. It's a shame it never really took off. With some money, luck and marketing savvy it could have been one of the great golf resorts in the Caribbean/Central America.

When it was open, I heard it was rated #3 in the Carribean. I played it twice, and loved it.

I played it once in '02 I think, with Jerry McD, great course but a little pricey. Of course, it was the only game in town.

Stayed at Caye Chapel for our honeymoon....nice place, well kept course, our villa was AWESOME, and the staff was great. We practically had the island to ourselves the entire time which was pretty cool too. I think it was listed for $75MM back then & that was June 08.

Is anyone concerned that a golf course on North AC means nasty stuff running into the reef? The pesticides, herbicides, fungicides; not to mention waste treatment...what happened to wildlife protection? Even if this thing lingers like most big development does, maintainence of a golf course cannot possibly be environmentally friendly. Not to the level that this part of the world needs. That's not to say that the rest of the world can become a septic, but you get my drift? No pun intended.

If you are having trouble sleeping read this

Nightmares or night night depending on your level of concern.

The link you posted refers to the "proposed" golf course and resort near Corozal Town, not on North Ambergris.

Not that most people think this will get off the ground in the next 10 or 20 years or so anyway.

Golf Course Closures Outpace Openings for Fifth Straight Year, Reports NGF
January 21, 2011 6:07 pm
Joanna DeChellisC&RB News0 Comments Wentworth Hills Golf Course in Plainville, Mass., is on the auction block. The Eagles Golf Club in Tampa, Fla., has filed for bankruptcy protection. The golf mecca of Myrtle Beach, S.C., lost 21 courses and more than 2,000 golf-industry jobs as rounds plummeted 22 percent last year, according to the Myrtle Beach Golf Association.

With the National Golf Foundation (NGF) reporting earlier this month that more golf courses closed than opened for the fifth year in a row, the financial struggles of Wentworth, Eagles, and Myrtle Beach are just snapshots of the tough economic times that club owners and operators continue to deal with worldwide.

“NGF tracked 46 18-hole equivalent golf course openings in 2010 vs. 107 closures, for a net negative of 61, the fifth consecutive year that closures have outpaced openings,” says to Jim Kass, NGF research director. More than 60 percent of the openings were public-fee courses.

Unfortunately, NGF’s Kass did not foresee a silver lining any time soon. “We expect [the trend] to continue for a while until things level out, meaning until supply matches demand,” Kass told Waggle Room.

I stand corrected (somewhat embarrassed and humbled). Nonetheless, my concerns are for development that tries to maintain non-native plants and the use of chemicals in that effort. No doubt these are detrimental to this delicate environment. Having lived in the Midwest all of my life, I have seen first hand the effects of the use of chemicals; both in crops and livestock, on the local streams. Google "three-legged frogs" and you will get many reputable articles discussing the worldwide problem; as well as explanations of why amphibian life is indicative of other processes in nature.

Allowing the placement of such development seems to be contradictory to saving the ocean environments. Especially after all we understand about the long term effects of chemicals and development of coastal areas.

I agree that golf courses are generally not good for the environment.

Of course, let's be real: Many of the things that go on every day on Ambergris Caye are not good for the environment.

Very interesting information. The article above deals with golf courses in the states; some of which are in seasonal areas. How does this compare to tropical climates where retirement communities are springing up like wildflowers and labor is cheaper? Maybe the closing of courses in the states is another part of the trends toward the tropics? How would we like to be the people that bought on one of those lovely golf courses (at extremely high prices) way back when; only to end up here where our home is now worth much less? And your green spaces are turning brown? Is that the future of this course too?

I would like to add that although it is not on North Ambergris Caye all the environmental concerns are the same, run off is a no no. I have heard of some places where they put down plastic under the turf to prevent pollution of the water table. Projects of these types should be required to post environmental bonds or have insurance to insure they comply with agreed upon procedures and do not damage the environment. As you note agricultural chemicals are hazardous and need to be used prudently.

I must say I was in Consejo for the first time this weekend and the area is stunning and IMO if done right (like Consejo Shores) it would be one heck of a nice area to reside or just visit and having Chetumal a fifteen minute boat ride away you can't beat the location.
