Waraguma
|
|
There are some recent not so great experiences by tourists dining at Waraguma reported in response to a thread on AC Good Eats which I started on scubaboard.com Scubaboard AC Eatery Recommendations (starting at post #6). Reports say the food is very good and that the portions are plentiful but that the pricing can differ between quoted and actual. It's only fair to give the owner(s) a chance to respond; I certainly don't want anyone to miss out on their wonderful food because of a simple misunderstanding. Comments?

It is good, but prices are high. We paid close to $30 US for a lobster burrito and 2 tacos that were not good at all. Tasted like dog food.

I only ate their food once and both times way to salty for me plus prices seemed high. I think they thought I was a tourist. LOL

Waraguma is always a consistent favorite for us, but we don't eat out that often (and when we do, we like a better atmosphere). However, we have recently heard mixed reviews from others.
We did split the seafood soup several weeks ago for lunch and it was delish and huge - really too much for 2 people. It was filled with all sorts of seafood, including scallops and crab (which is very expensive here) and I think the price was around $48 BZ/ ?GST. Not sure I could duplicate that dish for that amount...
I think they should either improve the atmosphere or reduce their costs / ingredients/ prices (and perhaps the quantity).... The atmosphere just cannot command the prices they are charging IMO.

I hear what you are saying Jeff. all I know is the food got worse and the prices went higher and I have only been coming to the Island for the past 4 years. It seems when they opened the larger place everything went down hill (food wise) and uphill( price wise.)

I don't eat street food and frankly did not have much of a positive attitude when I first tried the place. I like this place and think it is really cool. They have a nice side area and the Pupusas are amazing. Certainly a lobster burrito is not going to be sold for 20 BZD since the thing is the size of a room at ruby's.
This is street food with a seat and as far as I am concerned worth every penny.
I have never been to a restaurant that I did not have a complaint about.

Is Wednesday still Burrito day at Mickey's? They had the biggest burritos I've ever eaten. I automatically cut one in half and wrapped it to go before starting on the other half.

Elvi's is 500 times better and the same price. Waruguma didnt even have prices on their menu the last time we went. We arent going again.
Elvi's has better service, better food, and no guessing on the prices.

We went ONCE on recommendation, just this week, and thats the last time, no prices on the menu, and I’m sure they did not like us asking the price of each item, also think they made the prices up as we asked.... We had a burrito [full of rice!! To be fair, it was big] a Ceviche and a portion of taco’s [4], 2 waters, 1 soda and a bill of over $100bzd Think we will pass on any further recommendations to Waraguma.....

Dido on the overcharging at Waraguma. My husband & I went on a recommendation from this board and it was obvious that we were being "sized-up" when we ordered. I once worked for a hotel in the U.S. that used the same technique with walk in visitors. The well dresses and the very tired with children payed a lot more-just because we could get away with it. Needless to say, my career there was very short (2 Days) and I reported them to the BBB and the Attorney General in my state.
The worst part of this in Belize is that it re-enforces some of the negative stories of cultural dishonesty. Which we all know exists across all cultures. Does anyone there know the owner of Waraguma's and have they been notified of the damage that is being done to their business?

Good ceviche is made fresh and is very time consuming. Too bad that kitchens often think it best to make the quickest and easiest firt. I used to get ceviche at Lily's on the beach - excellent - but took a l-o-n-g time to get to me.

Sad...four of us went while on vacation last week and it was delish. There were no prices on the menu, and it ended up being more expensive than we anticipated, but everything was delicious, especially the seafood pupusas and the tostadas. My husband and I each brought home enough to eat for dinner the next night. I think we spent about $140 bz for four people, not including tip.

We ate here last year and the food was very good. Was looking forward to going back this year. I think we will go one more time and split some food and see if it still as good as last year. I hope so. But then again there are so many places to eat now and so many choices. Kinda hard to decide sometimes...

I enjoyed myself thoroughly last time, and my meal was great. I think I entertained the staff and the ladies out front by absolutely demolishing three or four pupusas and then polishing off a seafood/fish burro. When I ordered it the waiter stopped and looked at me "Mr sir you know that's for two people?" That did give me pause for about 5 seconds but I was hungry. It was the best damned grouper I've ever eaten.
I think they may have not charged me for some of the pupusas because the bill seemed kind of low. Maybe they just enjoyed my hackneyed Spanish and a the fun we were all having. Couln't say, but its a goto place for me and mine still. Its like any eatery of that kind; to each his own.

Bear, did you get your name because you eat so much, or because of your size, or both? You are obviously well educated, even though you have an insatiable desire to be the center of attention Mix a big laugh with an equally large dose of "meow" and temper that with a dash of mea culpa and you have my current state of mind. I tell you what AC, I'll PM you when I'm next on the island. I owe Marty a few lime juices and I'll buy whatever it is your'e drinking, and you can figure all that out for yourself. Boards can often slant one's opinion of an individual. The perceived "virtual" personality may or may not be representative of reality (Ernie, you may not masquerade as AC to get free beer). I will say that I wasn't aware that any level of egocentrism precluded the ability to learn. I guess you learn something new every day...well at least I do. Meanwhile allow me to offer up a few rewrites for your consideration, Bear, are you a big fat slob with a PhD in egocentricity? or my favorite... Bear, you big fat slob I don't care if you have a PhD in egocentricity your incessant commentary annoys the shit of me! lmao AC I'm not immune to the foibles of being human with access to the internet, the fascination with my newest home, or the desire to help by shared commentary. I'll simply offer a few favorite quotes in the hopes they will perhaps give you some better insight... "I can't think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything." ~ Bill Bryson "Don't tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you traveled." ~ Mohammed and lastly from America's own Immortal Bard, "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." ~ Mark Twain PS I still liked Waruguma, even though I had a fabulous time there.

My FAVORITE Street Food in San Pedro, Belize: Pupusas at Waraguma
Despite the fact that the pupusa is an El Salvadorean dish, if I was the head of the Belize Tourism Board, I would make it mandatory that all visitors to the island sample a pupusa on each trip to Ambergris Caye. Perhaps a stamp in your passport to give you a 25% discount on your exit fees at the airport would be in order. This food is that good. (You could get another discount for BBQ chicken with rice and beans and potato salad...but I'll work on the specifics).
There are a few places that make pupusas but my favorite is Waraguma (it is at the southern end of Middle Street). They make these delicious little stuffed corn pancakes on the street from 5pm until about 9pm and for lunch and all afternoon, they cook them in the kitchen.
...
The woman making the pupusas told me that it is a very easy process. The dough is just masa and water kneaded until smooth...
The dough is formed into a cup and stuffed with your fillings. Hmmm...doesn't seem that easy to me. It is then topped with a bit more dough and flattened into a fat pancake. Onto the griddle until the cheese starts melting out and starts to get crusty. Serve immediately. DEE-LISH-OUS.
The most popular flavors at Waraguma are Mixed (pork paste, beans and cheese) and the simple cheese one. Get this...they make up to 500 pupusas on a busy night.
You can eat in the open restaurant...
Or in the side garden...
Or take them to go. At $2.50bzd each, they are cheap, filling and delicious.
