Brother of former Prime Minister murdered

There were no gang related murders over the weekend, but an innocent life was still snuffed out in the crime wave sweeping across the country. The brother of Belize’s first Prime Minister, George Price, was found dead in his home over the weekend. The police believe that the senior citizen, eighty-four year old Samuel Price, was bludgeoned to death. Price was last seen at five-thirty p.m. on Friday and the investigators believe that his motion sensor light was either not working or turned off. Price lived in a secluded area just over the Haulover Bridge at a house called Tarpon Cove. He mostly lived a minimalist life, but still had been targeted by robbers on previous occasions. The motive for the heinous murder is not known, but the police department has detained two minors and one adult for questioning.

Sergeant Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer

Fitzroy Yearwood

“Police visited the residence of Samuel William Price, eighty-four years of Miles Five and a half Northern Highway. Mister Price resided at this place alone, but on a routine basis every Saturday, his grand-nephew and one of his nephew would take him shopping. On Saturday when they visited the home, first of all, they realized that the grill door that they usually entered was pried opened and the wooden door also there were signs that it was tampered with or broken. Upon entering the house, they found the lifeless body of Mister Price slouched in one of the bathrooms over a tub with apparent signs of violence towards the head. They immediately called the police. Police responded where we tried our best to remove certain prints. We lifted some fingerprints from the scene which we’re currently trying to find a match for. We have persons detained for questioning, but as far as any arrests, we haven’t made any in this recent case of murder.”

Jose Sanchez

“Was anything missing from the home?”

Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood

“Well because he lived alone, family members cannot ascertain whether anything was stolen. I can tell you that police removed a licensed 30-30 rifle and some ammunition that were still on the scene when we arrived.”

Jose Sanchez

“And that would have be from the assailants?”

Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood

“No that is licensed to the victim, Samuel Price. Mister Price had a license for the 30-30 rifle.”

Jose Sanchez

“But Fitzroy, have you had any reports before of Mister Price being attacked in his home?”

Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood

“I was going to get into that. Actually Mister Price was a victim of previous burglaries. As a matter of fact a point thirty-eight [millimeter pistol] was stolen on one of those occasions from him. I know that in this area, because it is a remote area and he lived alone, he made several reports of his home being burglarized.”

The autopsy was conducted this morning. The results have not been released, but Price will be laid to rest on Wednesday following services at Holy Redeemer Cathedral. He is survived by three, seven sisters and as we said earlier, his brother George Price.

George Price’s Brother Killed

Murder number 37 for 2011 is not just another statistic, not just another old beef turned into blood on a street corner; the victim is an 84 year old - former Prim Minister George Price's younger brother, Samuel Price.

Price lived alone at a home at mile five on the northern highway -and on Saturday, his nephew Clement went to check on him as he normally does.

But he found that wooden and metal doors on the second floor of the building had been broken into. From there he went upstairs and found his uncle dead - here's footage from the crime scene:

Monica Bodden Reporting
84 year old Samuel Price lived alone at this home - called Tarpon Cove - right after the Haulover bridge at mile 5 on the northern highway.

On Saturday morning, it became a crime scene as friends family members and police gathered in the yard.

After some hours of collecting evidence inside - police brought the body out at almost 11:00 am - as it was taken to the morgue one more murder mystery arises, who would want to kill this 84 year old and why?

Fitzroy Yearwood - Police Press Officer
"The police visited the residence of Samuel William price 84 yrs. old - mile 5 1/2 on the Northern Highway. Mr. Price resided at this place alone but on a routine basis every Saturday his grandnephew and one of his nephew would take him shopping and Saturday when they visited the home, first of all when the visited the home - the grill door that they usually enter was pried open and the wooden door also there was signs that it was tampered with or broken. Upon entering the house the found the lifeless body of Mr. Price slouch in one of the bathrooms over a tub with apparent signs of violence towards the head. They immediately call the police. Police responded. We tried our best to remove certain prints, we lifted some finger prints from the scene that we are currently trying to find a match for. We have persons detain for questioning but as far as any arrest we haven't made any in this recent case of murder."

"Because he lived alone, family members cannot ascertain whether anything was stolen. I can tell you that police remove a license 30/30 rifle and some ammunition that were still on the scene when we arrive."

Reporter
"Does that have anything to do with the assailants?"

Fitzroy Yearwood - Police Press Officer
"No, that is license to the victim Samuel Price. Mr. Price had a license for the 30/30 rifle. After our forensic report we would be able to answer whether or not. But we remove several items from the scene that we believe could have possible been used in the crime."

Information suggests that the elderly man's home had been burglarized over a dozen times:

Fitzroy Yearwood - Police Press Officer
"Mr. Price was a victim of previous burglaries; as a matter of fact a .38 was stolen on one of those occasions from him. Because this is a remote area and he live alone he made several reports of his home being burglarize. "

As noted in the story, the home was a target for thieves - and on one previous occasion about eight years ago, Price had shot and killed a man who he caught in the act.

Samuel Price was the father of three and grandfather and great grandfather to many more. He will be buried on Wednesday.

On Saturday, April 15, sometime after 9 a.m., the body of Samuel William Price, 84, brother of Leader Emeritus of the PUP, George Cadle Price, was discovered in his home, “Tarpon Cove”, at Mile 5 ½ on the Northern Highway.

Police say that his body was slouched over a tub in a bathroom of the house; he had been beaten to death.

At press time tonight, police say that they have no suspects.

Initial police investigation revealed that about 8:00 a.m., Clement Usher, his nephew, visited the residence, as he usually does every Saturday, where he found Price dead. Signs of forced entry were seen on both a wooden and a metal door on the second floor entrance of the house.

The responding officers and personnel processed the scene, canvassed the area, and the body was transported to the morgue at around 11 p.m. on Saturday, April 15 and a post-mortem was conducted this morning. Amandala made several attempts to speak to the family over the weekend and today, but we were unable to get any comment.

Samuel Price’s home has been invaded by unknown persons before. The most recent case was in June 2009 when an unknown assailant entered his home while he was watching TV, tied him up and robbed him at knife point. The assailant ransacked his house and left, and after he was able to free himself, Price discovered that his point thirty-eight Colt brand revolver containing five live rounds was stolen, along with one hundred dollars from his wallet.

Price has also killed an invader in the past. About two decades ago, Price shot a would-be burglar by the name of Allison O’Brien. O’Brien attempted to enter the home and an alert Price took out his handgun and shot him. Police investigations later determined that the killing was justifiable since it was done in self-defense.

We understand that there have been several other times burglars have broken into his home.

Price was a father of three children; a brother to 7 sisters and, as we said, the brother of George Cadle Price. He was also a grandfather and a great-grandfather.

In his later years, he lived alone and was frequently visited by his family on the weekends. He also kept in his possession licensed weapons for his protection.
