Fires in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and Central America The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured fires burning in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras on April 18. This MODIS visible image, captured on April 18 at 16:45 UTC (12:45 p.m. EDT), revealed fires (red spots) burning in the Mexican states of Quintana Roo, Yucatan and Campeche on the Yucatan Peninsula and also in states of Tabasco and Chiapas. Fires are also seen farther south (lower) in this image that are burning in Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. According to Reuters News Service there were 15 active fires in the state of Quintana Roo alone that have affected more than 1,000 acres. The Mnt Pine Ridge always has fires in April and May, as Marty can attest having driven thru them at night a few yrs ago. This year the Yalbac also caught fire because of the trees knocked down during the hurricane last Oct, lay rotting on the forest floor, which have now become tindling. Rains are a month away, give or take a week or two.
