Why are the flights so expensive to Belize at this time. I have been going back and forth from the US (Texas) and Belize since 2004 and never seen such high rates with no advertised specials. If things do not change it will kill any hopes of improving tourism over the summer months. Any hot deals out there?

They have been high since they enlarged the airport runway at international. Its the Belize government ..BTB..etc that just cant seem to understand the importance of tourism. In 5 years we went from no GST..to 12 1/2 %...they charge such unreasonable taxes on airlines flying in and out. 5 years ago the average RT fare to U.S was between $350 and $550 U.S..now its hard to find those fare to Houston or Miami, fares average about $800 now.
Even with the travel warnings about Mexico...its still booming. The Yucatan is still pretty safe and the airfare is cheap. RT from Cancun to US averages about $400. or less. We have been flying out of Cancun and back into Belize City on multicity tickets for half the price of flying RT from Belize City. Its crazy..the country is loosing so much money, then look at their attitude on education, and it seems they dont understand the connection to drug use and violence. A 6th grade education is not an education......

I just booked a RT on American between Chicago O'Hare & Cancun for $332 (Aug 5 - 15).

Another factor is lack of service this time of year. US Air from Charlotte and Delta from Atlanta are flying just once a week.

US Air has three or four flights a day from Charlotte to Cancun, but just one on Saturday to BZE.

Continental and American have more service, but overall air lift to Belize is limited in the off season, which puts additional pressure on fares.

I'm not sure who to blame....I can say that my last ticket had just as many add-on taxes and fees as it did for the ticket itself. Nearly 50/50....It appears a good part of those taxes and special fees were charged by both Goldson and the GOB....However, it also includes the exit fees....

Tax's and fee's on current ticket: U.S. 57.60, Bze. 49.75 = 109.35 or 19.6 % of base fare.

Everything's relative. 90 years ago to get from New York to Belize City on a United Fruit Company steamer would have cost US$150 -- about US$1,900 in today's dollars. That's one way. Round trip would have been about US$3,800.

WTF! Seattle to Belize......$1,246 + taxes RT!!!

We book our flights out of Cancun to the US and then back into Belize International. Saves us about $250 USD per person that way. It also gives us time to take a breath before heading back into civilization!

Not sure it this will help, but this is what I am doing in August...

Chicago to Cancun: $332 R/T (American)

Then taking bus from Cancun to Playa (stay overnight), then bus from Playa to Chetumal, then another bus from Chetumal to Corozal. The buses and the overnight in Playa will cost me about $75-80 US + a day each way, but it works for me since I am spending most of my visit in Corozal--coming to SP only for a few days. It still beats the $850 I spent on airfare ALONE on my last trip.

(I have talked to some people who have done this, but taken the water taxi from Chetumal to San Pedro)

Loansum - kayak.com American Airlines seems to have been the cheapest option lately.

$615 each + Taxes ($322) for 3 people Continental from Oklahoma City. These kind of prices make a long weekend trip hard to justify anymore.

Nothing direct from Cancun to San Pedro.

Last year, Maya Regional began operating flights between Cancun and Belize City, but the flights are no longer appearing on the Maya website. I haven't heard if they have stopped these flights permanently.

We want all of the convenience of air travel, and it should probably cost more given the overall impacts. I think airlines offer flights depending upon how many folks are flying to a given destination. Then, the trick for tour-based countries is to find a balance between making it attractive and just blowing it out. Look at Bhutan if you want to see protective governmental policies and structures.
