Hey Guys,

Looking out for the best food places to go to. Coming in May for 5-6 days. We will be 5 miles north but will travel down daily. The taste and quality of the food is most important and then environment and then if it matters the actual ambiance.

We love all cuisines and want to surely experience authentic local food too.

We like nice sit down places and roadside hang outs too. Places with a good pub/bar night life is also good to knock off food and dance and drinks together.

Also, is there a special special place I can take my wife on our 10th anniversary evening. Possible a local romantic secret. I mean the whole place seems special special so I do not know how to top it.

Thanks,

Ankur

Anniversary - Rojo, Mambo (at Mata Chica), or Portofino.
All relatively near where you are staying.
You can walk to Rojo or Mambo, and Portofino has a complimentary evening boat.

Other food up near where you will be staying ....

GREAT nachos - Costa Maya - 7 miles north of San Pedro (and you can use the pool)

Will let the rest of the crew advise you on in-town fare. There is LOTS to choose from.

My favorites in or near town:

On the water:
Blue Water Grill (lunch and dinner)
Lily's Treasure Chest (lunch, great for people watching)
Wild Mango (lunch or dinner)
Fido's (great music and key lime pie)
Estelle's (best breakfast on the island)

In town:
Caramba's
The Reef (great prices)
Mickey's
El Fagon (authentic Maya food, secluded spot near airport)
Elvi's (Maya buffet on Friday nights)

For sunset over the lagoon, back side:
Sunset Grill

For romantic, out of the way:
Hidden Treasures

Great burgers and live music:
Legends Burgers (just north of the bridge; great music and dancing on Tuesday nights-jam night)

Great BBQ:
Lazy Croc (about one mile north of bridge, on edge of small lagoon with crocs)

Near Lazy Croc:
Ak Bol (a yoga retreat that has a bar and restaurant right on the water that has great food for breakfast or lunch at great prices. Beautiful and peaceful--toes in the sand...)

I also heard that Red Ginger at The Pheonix resort is great.

The papusa stands on middle street are great too.

For delicious frozen custard try DandE's on middle street next to Caramba's.

There are so many wonderful choices that we can't fit them all in on our visits! Enjoy!

New in town is Crave, on front street but not on the water side. Good food, nice atmosphere, live music, good bar.

Whats the bridge? I thought I did all my research. Is this some sort of river/creek cut off.

On the very north edge of town, the island is "cut" in two by a "river" that flows from the ocean side to the lagoon side of the island. It separates San Pedro from the much larger and less inhabited north part of the island. There are many nice resorts up north.

There is a small toll bridge that crosses the river. Up until 2006, it was a hand-pulled ferry crossing...

I loved Lily's Treasure Chest for lunch - And Blue Water Grill was so nice for dinner. It's been over 3 years, and my hubby still raves about the Key Lime Pie we had at Ramon's.
I was sad to see that Ambergris Delight is gone - that was our favorite spot for dinner

Sounds like you maybe near Mata Grande. If you are you should check the BBQ at lunch time at the Mata Grande grocery store. Ian the Lion cooks up some great food under the trees beside the store.

Most locals enjoy the chinese joints. Not much for atmosphere, but made to order and pretty tasty too.

Robert is not always there or always open, that's a long haul to find out. But, if one really wants something tasty and handy, and jerked, then JamBel's Jerk is hard to beat. Currently, to be found across from Tropics Air.

I agree with Bobcat, you need a daily trip to Manelly's. Another place we like that tends to ge overlooked is Mickey's on Middle Street. It's clean, has good food and service.

No Ras Safari/Robert? That is too sad. Best Jerk Chicken ever and he always treated us like family.
Fortunately Jambal Jerk is still around. Even though it always seems to be in a different location. Same great food. We would be crushed if they werent somewhere. Like when we lost Popi's.

Damn, Robert isn't coming back? Ras Safari has long been one of my favorite afternoon adventures. Sure, once in a while it wasn't open, but when it was . . . perfection.

Yes, agreed, if JamBel's is lost, I will be very sad.

I really really miss the Papi's of old and also Ambergris Delight was one of my long time favorites as well. Sigh.

But there are other places now for me to try and they will become my new favorites. smile

Robert was just lovely. Sad to see him gone. But don't despair, Robin's place, opposite from Royal Palms, under the thatch, does fantastic jerk chicken. Robin is Jamaican. He's a kind and very friendly man and his chicken is fantastic. I believe it is closed on Saturday.

Lion is no longer at MG Grocery, but on weekends somebody else has taken on the Bar-B-Q. Cute spot for a stopover on a drive north.

Also worth the drive - Nachos at Costa Maya - one order is a meal for two people. My friend from San Antonio swears these the best nachos she's ever had, and being from Tex Mex country she says she really knows her nachos. Burgers are darn good too. A very nice spot.
