I was wondering what could be grown there in a backyard garden? Do veggies do well? Herbs? Ornamentals? Does anyone here enjoy gardening and have some success with it?

Its not easy and lots of people try.
Salty air and sand makes for a short list but if you plant the right things and store water to keep them alive during dry spells it can be done.
I have a neighbor that drops off tomatoes , peppers, papaya, watermelon and cantaloupe to my house from her garden,
but shes exceptional.

That sounds wonderful! I have gone through the Master Gardener program at the local University here in the states, and of course, I know the challenges would be different in San Pedro. Where do people get their seeds? I have been hunting online, but have only come up with Teakettle.

Orangewalk town is a town in the middle of an agricultural area.
She likes seeds from there. Lots of stores like that in Orangewalk.

I dabble in gardening here on the Island - even have a compost pile LOL
And have a decent selection of herbs (even spinach). I just had to figure out what the crabs and geckos don't like and keep those in protected areas in pots.

There is a new nursery in town "Ladybug", which has been helpful as she carries the best black soil, small starter plants and also a variety of seeds (although I usually bring mine from the states as they allow seeds, just no live plants).

Whew, the birds and the iguanas and the ants.

But you can grow water melon, cucumber, tomatoes, basil, oregano just to name a few.

You can also buy seeds at the Green house.

oh, I saw tamarind the other day, and the bread fruits are hanging from the trees, bananas, plantains and key limes are common. The sea grapes are starting to ripen too.

Yes, all types of peppers.

I know someone that grows lemon grass and also passion fruit here.

Whoopie!! I love to hear all these awesome garden success stories! Thanks for all the great feedback. I wondered about bringing in seeds from the US, so thanks for that feedback as well. I have problems with slugs and earwigs, not iguanas.....yet.
