I read the post about the guy being chopped in the forehead and was wondering how frequent violent crime is on AC and what type? Of course drunken brawls and jealous rage is unavoidable in any country but robbery, muggings, drug violence is something I frown upon?

Unfortunately too frequent. Several people I know have been robbed and or beaten. Many broken into while they are in their homes. It concerns me.

Once is too often, but in a majority of places you might consider moving a person with a cash-register business and a safe full of money runs a risk and needs to implement programs to avoid stick-ups.
Our bar in bucolic Mill Vally, California was open maybe 2 weeks before our first hold-up. We just did not think about it happening and we took inadequate precautions with a bag full of money.

The thing that concerns me even more is breaking in while you are in your home.

Violence is a two way street, keep it in your tool box just in case!

Reading about the massacre in Guatemala is Belize prone to drug cartel violence? Are the robbers usually armed with fire arms or "only" machetes and knives?
How difficult is it to obtain a carry permit?

No, not at all like Guatemala. They are Wild West and we're a bit more civilized.
Very strict gun control laws in Belize, and I like it like that.

Fish - do yourself a BIG favor and come for a personal experience of the island - when you get here you will find it all feels a lot different than it "writes".

You mean only criminals have guns then?
