So, let's see, so far we've done drug wars, human traffic, and what's next? Of course, counterfeit! A tidy little sum of it came to the attention of police today - but the shocking part if who was trying to bank it: another police officer, and one with years in the job!
That senior police officer is under scrutiny tonight after he tried to deposit 1600 US dollars in counterfeit notes at the Belize Bank.

It happened this morning at the Northside branch on Coney Drive around 10:00 a.m., when the Sergeant, who is attached to the Special Branch, went to the bank to try and deposit the money in his account. As per procedure, bank personnel called the police at the sight of 16, one-hundred US dollar notes - all which tested positive as counterfeit.

Officers from the CIB unit responded and found the well-known officer. They collected his ID, his deposit slip and the money but did not arrest or detain the Sergeant - which is a departure from procedure. Typically, when such situations occur, the person with the counterfeit would have his or her home searched and they would be questioned at some length, pending charges of possession of counterfeit currency.

The officer was back at work this afternoon, tasked simply to write a report pending further orders. No report has been entered and the sense we get is that the senior brass of the department is hoping this one will just go away. But, it's a big deal; he's a senior man in a sensitive post, and word is all over the department and was even on facebook this afternoon, we are told. We'll wait and see what happens next.

David Sedacey found with stash of fake US hundred dollar notes

Earlier we told you about a cop that is facing charges for counterfeit currency, well at about two o’clock this afternoon, police conducted at the house of David Sedacey. They found a stash of fake US hundred dollar notes; a hundred and fifty in all. Sedacey has been charged with Possession of counterfeit notes. And in respect of a number of Chinese passports found on a Chinese national reported on Wednesday, a police report claims that the documents were legit and that the person found with them was in the process of applying for extended visas.

Head Of City Special Branch Charged With Counterfeit Possession

For the past two nights, we've been reporting on a police sergeant who'd been caught at the Belize Bank with 16 hundred dollars in counterfeit US hundred-dollar notes.

It is a case that was dealt with deferentially, meaning the Sergeant - who is a highly regarded veteran of the department - had been getting what looked to be special treatment; he didn't have his home searched and he was not immediately arrested. Instead, police put the case under investigation. Today, though, with the news breaking that there is a mass amount of US counterfeit in circulation, the pressure came to a head and 38 year old Sergeant Sherwood Wade - the officer commanding for Special Branch in Belize City was charged for the possession of counterfeit notes.

He appeared in the #1 Magistrate's Court where he pleaded not guilty to the charge. With his attorney Simeon Sampson asking for the bail to be reasonable he was released on a bail of eight thousand dollars and his case was adjourned until August 17th.

Another man charged with possession of counterfeit was also taken before the court this afternoon. 35 year old David Sedassey, an unemployed of West Canal was charged with possession of 150 one hundred US dollar counterfeit notes. That's fifteen thousand US dollar sin funny money and no plea was taken because it will be treated as an indictable matter. He was released on bail of six thousand and his case was adjourned until July fourth.

When police went to search Sedassey's home yesterday afternoon, the money was found in two plastic bags in his pocket. We should note that the serial numbers on the bills allegedly found with Sedassey do not match those that Wade was trying to deposit.

As we noted, there are reports that there is a mass amount of US counterfeit currency in circulation on the Belize market right now. You can find a listing of all the suspect serial numbers detected so far at 7newsbelize.com.

Senior police officer tries to deposit counterfeit currency at Belize Bank

Reliable information to Amandala today is that a police officer attached to the Special Branch attempted to deposit $1,600 in counterfeit US currency at the Belize Bank in sixteen $100 notes.

Remarkably, he has not been arrested, or his home searched, as has been the practice when a person is caught with counterfeit currency, and police have refused to say why.

And because he has not been charged, his name cannot be released.

We understand at around 10 a.m. yesterday, the officer, a sergeant, went to the Northside Belize Bank Branch on Coney Drive. The bank personnel, who discovered that one of the $100 notes was counterfeit, called the police.

CIB responded on the scene and they confiscated his deposit slip, his identification card and the money; police also say that they’ve detained him and that statements have been taken in connection with the money.

Late this evening, we attempted to contact Police Minister Doug Singh and Police Press Officer Sergeant Fitzroy Yearwood about the matter.

Singh is in Guatemala in connection with the massacre of civilians in that country, close to our borders, but Yearwood was not available for comment as to why was there a departure from normal police procedure, in relation to this officer’s detention and subsequent searching of his home.

And while police appear quick to protect one of their own, another citizen was not so lucky. In a press release sent today, Thursday, police say that at about 2:00 p.m. today, they arrested a man while on mobile patrol on West Collet Canal, conducted a search on him and discovered “a transparent plastic bag with two amounts of $100 US notes that appear not to be genuine. A search of the house and the premises yielded nothing illegal.”

Police released the man’s name, picture and address, and said that he was “formally arrested and charged.
