The results of the 2011 PSE were released half and hour ago. It's a 19 page release and we haven't had much time to review it. But here's what we can tell you.
Overall, it's not a pretty picture. Average performance was down in every subject: English, Math and Science, except social studies which stayed the same.

Worryingly, the mean score in English was down eight percentage points while math was down five percentage points. And in another change the top finishers were mostly form public, not private schools.

They are, in first place, Aliyah Marin of Holy Redeemer in Belize City, in second, Josette Mcgann of united Evergreen In Cayo, in third, Jordan Murillo from Belize Elementary, in fourth, Alessandra Guttierez from San Pedro RC, tied with her, Kate Ramirez from Bernice Yorke in Belize City, in sixth, Emile Hung from Our Lady of Guadalupe in Cayo, in seventh, Joshua Can from St,. Joseph's RC in Belize City, and rounding out the top eleven finishers, in a three way tie Luani Fabro from Holy Redeemer in Belize City, Wu Hin Yuan from Belize Elementary in Belize City and Alyssa Craig from Horizon Academy. We'll have a more thorough review of the exam in Monday's newscast.

HOLY REDEEMER SCHOOL STUDENT TOPS PSE

This year's top student for the Primary School Exams hails from Holy Redeemer Primary School. Aliyah Marin topped the exams with a score of three hundred and eighty five points. Placing second overall this year is JosetteMcGann of United Evergreen Primary with three hundred and seventy six points and Jordan Murrillo of Belize Elementary with three hundred and sixty nine points. Rounding off the top five are Alessandra Gutierrez of San Pedro Roman Catholic School and Kate Ramirez of Bernice Yorke, each with three hundred and sixty eight points. But while there is reason to celebrate among those who excelled, the preliminary results show that the overall performance of students on the exams was still dismally poor. This year, close to seven thousand students sat the exams in the four subject areas: English, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science. In English the average score was 54.9 percent, while in Math, the average score was 47.16 percent. In Social Studies, the mean score was 63.85 percent, and in Science, the average grade was 64.38 percent. Half of the students scored above 66 percent and half below as indicated by the median score.
