... to come true in Mexico

A delegation of high school students under the age of fifteen is heading to Mexico City on Saturday where they will represent the Jewel in an Under Fifteen basketball tournament. All bets are on Belize’s Under Fifteen National Basketball Team to excel in the weeklong games that would then advance the local boys to another round of games on the court in Cancun. You will recall that a decision had been made to invest in a younger crop of athletes to represent Belize in the COCABA Championship Tournament as well as the FIBA games. According to assistant coach, Fred Garcia, despite limited resources, his players have come a long way to be able to participate in the summer games.

Fred Garcia, Assistant Coach, U-15 Basketball Program

“It’s been a long process actually it’s the second phase to the Central American tournament they had a year ago. And now it is Centro basket. It should be held in Mexico City. It should be a five day event. We are hoping that we will qualify out of that which will propel us a week time after to Cancun to the FIBA America Tournament. So we are looking forward to some good things and that’s where we’re at at this time.”

“In terms of the preparations, I know these guys have a pretty stiff workout regiment and what have you. How are they shaping up in terms of preparing themselves to go abroad to representing Belize?”

Fred Garcia

“Well they’ve responded well to what we’ve put out. We still haven’t turned the screws the way we want to. A big part of it is logistics; one, the civic; two. We have a lot kids still in school this time of year. We have some kids in the district who won’t participate because they have school as well. So really for us it’s kinda troublesome, but those that are here have really participated well, have taken in. We believe they are ready to go, in fact, I think eight of these kids just came back from the U-17 which they qualified for Puerto Rico in about two months time, in August. So I think we’ll be fine.”

Boy Basketballers Win Opening Game, By a Hair!

But there's no controversy surrounding a neat win by Belize's male under 16 basketball team in the opening game of the Centro Basket Tournament in Mexico City.
Belize played the opening game against Costa Rica - and squeaked by winning 71 to 70.

Brian White dominated with 23 points and ten rebounds for Belize.

Belize faces Puerto Rico tomorrow which is expected to be a much tougher game.

Six teams are in the tournament, and the top two finishers qualify for the FIBA Americas U16 Men's Championship in Cancun next week.

Belize Loses In Basketball

Last night when we reported that Belize's under 16 national Basketball team had squeaked by with a win in the opening game of the Centrobasket Tournament in Mexico City, we warned that game two would be against Puerto Rico, one of the hemispheric powers in basketball.
And, regrettably, that caution proved prophetic: this afternoon at the Centro Olímpico Deportivo Mexicano Belize fell to the Puerto Ricans 108 to 80. Anthony Moses led Belize with 28 points.

The 28 point loss surely stings but to put it in context, Puerto Rico beat Guatemala by 97 points yesterday - you heard right, 97 POINTS! So, in the larger picture Belize losing by 28 - while not admirable 28 is respectable. It gets no easier for Belize as our next game is against the home team, Mexico.

That game is playing late tomorrow - so we can only hope to have results by newstime. We'll kepi you posted.

Belize’s Boys Failed To Advance

Last week, we were giving you daily updates on Belize's under 16 basketball team as they participated in the Centro Basket tournament in Mexico City.
But we're none too eager to share the weekend results because the team came in fourth and failed to qualify for the next round.

The team went one and two in its last three games, losing to Mexico and El Salvador, each by seven points, while they beat Guatemala by 72 points.

But that wasn't good enough - as it earned Belize fourth place. Belize was heavily favoured in its last game against El Salvador but the team's leading scorer and the tournament's top rebounder Brian White could not play any significant minutes because he woke up on game day with an acute stiff neck. Had Belize own that game, it would have advanced to the America's Under 16 Championship - which no Belize team at any level has ever made it to.
