The Northern bus schedule came into effect on Sunday and at least one bus
operator is not happy with the changes.

Manuela Ayuso Cantun reporting...
“It has been the subject of much controversy but over the weekend a new bus
schedule was implemented. While it went mostly without incident,
Gilharry  Bus Line is not happy with the new schedule and staged a
demonstration this morning. A convoy of buses   circled around
the Corozal bus terminal at day break, a signal of a strike that has been
instituted by the company’s owner, Froylan Gillharry

“The way they have scheduled our runs, I will not run them.  I prefer
to close down this business, maybe that is what they want.  It is up
to the public whether they really want us to continue give the service.”

Gilharry lost its early morning runs to Moralez and Cabrera Bus companies.
A new scheduled posted on the wall inside the Corozal Terminal has Gilharry
buses running at 15 minute and half hour intervals from 9am to 11 am from
Corozal to Belize City.

Froylan Gilharry – Owner, Venus Bus Line

“We were doing 11 to 12 runs, we were asked to fill in the gaps where
people were at the terminals and then we can put in an extra bus but
normally we were doing 10 and then we went up to 12.  In our new
application we applied for four more runs.  Out of 16 we applied for
we got only eight and it was not we applied for, none of it.’

Gilharry Bus line is scheduled to run from Belize City to Corozal from 5pm
to 8pm. While this time slot would allow the company some runs during peak
commuting time Gilharry says he would still be losing money.

Froylan Gilharry – Owner, Venus Bus Line

“Three of the runs are ok but the balance is really off. Like for instance
7:30 at night, we start this 30 years behind and it has never been a
profitable run, it always puts us in expense especially on Sundays.
Two weeks ago I made $14.00, and some other trips $70.00 dailuy so if the
7:30 run cannot even pay for its expenses, they want  me to run at
8:00 in the night which definitely I won’t run, I prefer to park the buses
and not to make that run.”

We tried contacting the ministry of transport for comment but to no avail.
In the meantime 54 bus employees are uncertain of employment while their
boss Froylan Gilharry seeks legal advice before taking further action.

Anyone know whether some of the buses still continue on to Chetumal and also depart from ADO or New Market terminals there, or do they all stop at the border now? Was told in Corozal that Belize buses now can't cross the border as they used to.

I just returned to Corozal from the New Market on a Belize bus. They don't go to ADO terminal.

Earlier this year, BBOC took over the 3 daily express runs between Belize City and Chetumal, but BBOC are not using air-conditioned buses and they terminate at the New Market in Chetumal. Currently, no Belizean buses use the ADO terminal.

There are several Belizean buses per day crossing the border and continuing to Chetumal. Some buses and mini-buses do not cross and only go as far as the casinos, while some cross the bridge, stop at the immigration building, and then turn around and return to Belize.
