he Caye Caulker Roman Catholic School will benefit from a new school building

“Primary School have been in need of more space at the school for over six years. Today that wait is over as ground was broken at the school grounds for a new two classroom building. A majority of the finance for the project was raised by the Caye Caulker Village Council, which is chaired by Alberto Villanueva.

“ There is also one other group that really went all out for us, the Chinese community on Caye Caulker, they contributed a significant sum of money so it is three party thing where we had the Minister, our representative, the council and the Chinese community because we all feel education is important if we want a better society or a better Caye Caulker we need to have a sound system of education and that begins with basic infrastructure.”
Today additional funds were handed to the school for the project by Belize Rural South Area Representative, Manuel Heredia.

“For me it is extremely important that young people are empowered to have an education and they are empowered to be in a comfortable space so even though resources are limited, I still made an effort from the BTB point of view to contribute $10,000.00 towards this project and I am sure that with the assistance of the town council and the little funds that have been raised by the teachers this willbecome a reality.”
School Principal Enelda Rosado says the new space will be alleviating several problems the school has been facing as the student population keeps growing.

“Teachers and students get very frustrated especially during the hot summer months with no proper ventilation and lighting in the classrooms, no space for them to be moving around and educational activities to be taking place in the classroom. With these additional classrooms will alleviate some of these problems that we are experiencing at this moment.”

In addition Rosado says the new space will allow the school to reopen the Library and home economics room that had been shifted to accommodate children.

“The home economics room again we will be utilizing that and the school library, we are looking forward to that. The library is something that is very much needed to have the children reading.”

The project is estimated to cost around eighty thousand dollars. The aim is to open the new building by the start of the new school year.
