Only if you are Belizean born,,its a very common occupation for nationals..Non Belizeans would never be able to get this type of work

A dental hygienist is very different than a dental assistant. Training is much more technical and longer. I suspect there aren't many Belizean hygienists. The pay would not compare to what you are accustomed to either!
That said, Cooper is correct the jobs do go to trained Belizeans first, as they should.

Bren, I don't believe there are any Belizean dental hygienists on San Pedro. There are four dentists and I think one American hygienist who works with her dentist husband.
Your best plan is to visit with the dentists here and ask them if they could use your services.If they do, perhaps they would help you obtain the necessary work permit to work in this country, which you would need even as a volunteer.

Whats different here is that the Dentist are the hygienist. No separation as in the U.S. Boy it saves you alot of money with the under gum scaling etc. Dentistry is one thing that is well covered and done well here. Lots of them as well.

Agree on Dr Mark and Joan at Blue Dolphin. I have had a crown put in and my husband, a bridge. Both jobs have been complimented by our stateside dentist.

What did each of these jobs cost?

$1950us for a 3 tooth gold bridge in 2011 and $800us for a porcelain crown in 2009. About 2/3 the price of our US dentist.

Makes the gold crown I had in England a month ago seem exceptionally good value. I pay around US$30/month and there was no extra charge for the crown.

Now, that is great insurance. Our US insurance did pay half of the fees I quoted for Dr. Mark's work.

You may want to check out Dentist in Belize City, a common rule is San Pedro prices are about twice as high as anywhere else. I have had several root canals and porcelain crowns done for only $450 US. a few teeth pulled at $20 U.S. cavity filled also at $20 U.S. Xrays about $10. Deep gum scaling about $30. All done very professionally.
