What is it with stores [A & R on middle street and a local store on middle street] not taking 1 cent coins? Twice today a store asked me if I had the correct change, I gave them 5 x 1 cent coins and they said “We don’t take these!!”
I find most stores will either round up or round down the change to exclude 1 cent peices. Sausage factory is probably the only place I shop that still accepts and gives them as change.
I throw them all in a big jar along with 5c and 10c and the when it's full I just give them to one charity or another. Better than throwing them away, they're valuable to someone.
I' ve been doing this for years. A couple years ago I gave a 5 gallon water jug full of penny's to the local school for their penny drive. Needed a hand truck to move it.
Honduras has just totally disregarded all their coins. Its something like 1 lempira to 10cents bz, so coins worth less than a lempira are truly less than worthless because of the expense to manufacture them.. We're luck to have a healthy economy.
Sometimes I fill a bag with smaller coins and a few bigger ones and leave it somewhere for someone to find. Gets rid of our small change and hopefully makes some kid happy they found a big bag of change.
