I was wondering if anyone has gone out and caught any Mai Mai from San Perdo? We do the reef fishing, but sure would love to get a Mai Mai to eat while down there in Oct. Are there any captains that do Mai Mai fishing?

A friend of mine was out fishing on Wednesday afternoon and he caught a half dozen of them outside the reef along with a dozen tuna. It will really depend on when you are here but right now they are being caught.

OK, here is some trivia - in what language are each of these names for this fish? lampuga, lampuka, rakingo, calitos, maverikos, dorado.

Hunter I think Rykat and I both understand you to mean Mahi Mahi which is the Hawaiian name of the dolphin fish. In Spanish its dorado, (the golden one) sometimes you'll even hear a skipper break it down further to dorado (male) and dorada (female). The shape of the head is key to the sexing. (byWarren I'm debating whether to get sucked into your Google search of the names! )

There may be some dorado in October but I'd say its starting to taper off from the peaks in mid summer. They make their first appearances in May and there is even a local dorado tournamnet. Check this link

They are truly rats of the sea in that they multiply quickly, eat (and strike) anything and grow rapidly in their fairly short life span.

Lampuga = italian,
Calitos = Castillian Spanish

Mexico, Central America, South America
maverikos dorado, maverikos, dorado, calitos = Spanish

Stumped me on Rakingo but I'd bet its African in origin.

Yes, that one stumped me too. Only thing I could find is it is another name for a male dorado, but not sure in what language.
