Finally, A New Interim Director Of Tourism

After a long and stony silence on the abrupt departure of Director of Tourism Seleni Matus a week ago - the BTB finally issued a statement this evening announcing that someone is at the wheel.

It is Javier Paredez, who's been working with the BTB for the past four years, currently as the Director of Revenue Collections and Registrar of Hotels. He's been named interim director of tourism and will be responsible for the leadership and administration of the BTB.

If it seems underwhelming, it is; Paredez is likely just a placeholder until the board hires a new Director. A release says that the Board has established an executive committee to successfully guide the transition process. A letter from the Minister of Tourism to industry partners this evening says that, quote, "the Board readily accepted theresignation of Director, Seleni Matus," end quote.

On leaving, Matus has told seven news that she felt that there was a power play afoot to transfer programs and budgetary allocations from the BTB to the Ministry. She added that increasingly political overtones were coming to factor into the decision making process.

Last Friday, Seleni Matus abruptly resigned as Director of the Belize Tourism Board, a job she held for less than two years. Matus says political interference was getting in the way of her tourism plan. The Minister and Board announced today that Javier Paredez has been tagged as the Interim Director until a successor is appointed to replace Matus. We note that Paredez has been with the B.T.B. for four years. He was initially involved in the development of the 2010-2012 Action Plan and was later appointed as Director of Revenue Collections and Registrar of Hotels and Timeshare. According to the announcement, Paredez will retain those duties and as Interim Director he is additionally charged with the administration of the B.T.B.
