Earlier this year Ambergris Today posted a web poll asking whether or not you agree that there are too many street vendors flooding Central Park and a majority of the votes casted agreed that there are too many.

These street vendors encroach on the seating areas at the park and even make it difficult for parking; adding to the congestion. Many have plywood tables (4ft x 8 ft) placed near the park benches with huge umbrellas sticking out on the street sides causing a hinder to traffic flow and parking. These merchants have proven to be problematic and many have expressed their frustration and annoyance on this situation.

Mayor Elsa Paz and Deputy Mayor Severo Guerrero met with the street vendors of Central Park on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at her office to discuss about their relocation. With the presence of two Tourism Police, Mayor Paz informed these vendors of the relocation they need to make including some rules and regulations they need to follow in order to continue selling at Central Park.

Mayor Paz told the vendors that they would be relocated under the main palapa at Central Park and that the San Pedro Town Council will be providing them with standardized tables measuring 4ft x 4ft for all vendors. She also stated that the palapa will undergo repairs to the thatch roof and proper lighting and water will be installed at the palapa. They will have access to the bathroom at the Central Park and a Tourism Police will be stationed on site to oversee that business is conducted at an orderly manner.

Not quite happy with these changes, the street vendors vented their frustrations and comments on the change. Many did not like the idea of being placed under the palapa as they will no longer be allowed to have the large (4ft x 8ft) plywood to display their arts and crafts.

San Pedro Town Council officials met with the artisans and vendors of the Central Park to discuss a plan to relocate them.

Maria Novelo reporting...
“Artisans that occupy the side streets of Barrier Reef Drive, along the Central Park, met with the town council to discuss a proposed plan to provide a new location for them. While there is no marketplace for these vendors, the move comes at a time when the Island is at its peak of its mawga season.

“I accept the new location, but I’m not really happy because it will not work in our situation. We are going to lose everybody that pass by road, by their golf carts; they are not going to see us anymore. They are going to see the sign for sure but, they are not going to approach and its going to make us sell less.”

According to Mayor Elsa Paz, the move, while it is just a few feet away from their original spot, is being done for several reasons.

Elsa Paz – Mayor, San Pedro
“The reason why we are moving them is because, they have been using the planters that we have , and place their souvenirs there, the benches that we have on stage have been used to place their souvenirs and some people have no place to sit down. Some of the plants are dying. They don’t help us to keep our park clean, they go eat there and place their garbage everywhere. Another reason is that, that there has been a lot of reports from residents of San Pedro that have been seeing people selling art but at the same time offering drugs to the tourists which is bad.”

Not at all convinced with the rational given to them, the vendors say that they have no choice but to comply with the new rule. Some fear that the change will affect their sales.

“ We are not going to sell as much because we are going to reduced the space for the items we are going to sell. This is not helpful I don’t think it’s a solution because, a real solution is a plan, a plan that all the people for the people that work in this kind of work."

The Mayor has pledged a commitment, to improve the space under the Central Park Palapa.

Elsa Paz – Mayor, San Pedro
“ So we will provide the police there, all the time that they are there.”

Maria Novelo – Reporter
And the town council has committed to that right?

Elsa Paz – Mayor, San Pedro
“ Yes, we are committed to that. We are told that within two weeks time we are going to move them because we are still working on the electricity part. We are going to provide good lights, and we are still waiting on the signs. And also we told that in two weeks time, the palapa is going to be fixed. We need to fix the palapa. When we have everything accomplished, we are going to call another meeting and we move.”
