I have some family coming to visit us in Feb. Anyone have any suggestions on how to go about doing the ATM cave tour. The cheapest route? I know you can fly directly from SP but that's more $$$ than I'd like to spend. Anyone ever take the tour from the mainland. Can I drive out to ATM and get a tour guide on site? Any input would be great. Thanks in advance.

The flight out of San Pedro is just out to Municipal Airport and its there you will most likely meet the tour company and go by van/cab to the site.
I don't think you can go to the ATM and meet a guide, best to get an organized tour, too many obstacles if you don't.
might save a few bucks taking the water taxi to Belize city.
I'll bet Katie Valk can fix you up!

I find this all very misleading. I took the cave tour and was running low on cash. I couldn't find an ATM anywhere around there.

More guys with a sense of humor are always welcome :-)
On the serious side lots of folks ask about ways to do things cheaper like the trip from international to San Pedro, and they usually just end in spending a very few less dollars for a helova lot more aggravation and time wasted.
In the case of the ATM trip I think its impossible to do independent, just gona hafta pay the price!

Arrange the tour through the proper channels. Totally agree with Elbert. The trip is awesome, and you do have to fly into Municipal to get the guide, but it's worth the price. Discovery Expeditions can arrange the whole group for you. They will even pick you up in the morning and take you to the airstrip.

You can't go to the ATM and meet a guide... you need to catch a water taxi and arrange a pick up when booking the tour with a Belize City tour operator.

Or... stay overnight in San Ignacio and book a tour with Pacz. (http://www.pacztours.net/)

I'm with you, spend a night or two in San Ignacio area, and go with a well recommended tour guide. The ATM cave trip was one of the best experiences of my travels. I feel it is a must do.

ATM is in my view one of the best Belize tours available for those fit and interested enough. Do it justice and stay one or two nights at Pooks Hill Lodge which is just downstream from the Cave. They have family sized accommodation that are very reasonable and it's our favourite mainland getaway tucked away in prime jungle, tons of wildlife all around as it butts against a large National Park making thousands of acres of untouched forest and the Lodge is set around a Maya ruin on Roaring Creek.

Phil, great advice! Not only do I agree that it is one of the best Belize tours, it is one of the best I have done in the world.
