Hey everyone we just got back Saturday night from 2 weeks on Cayo Espanto. Everything went pretty good. Our first impressions though were kind of off. These were in Belize City, where, when we were asking a woman behind the counter what we were paying for at her counter, she looked at us as if she spoke no English, and we were stupid for asking her anything, and never answered us ...weird. Then, after we finally pay, she directs us somewhere else in perfect English. Then Maya Air boards us and another couple, starts the plane, then stops it and takes us off, because they had more people waiting to go somewhere else, so we were stuck in Belize airport for another 30 minutes or so being told - "Just five more minutes" every five minutes.
Finally we land in AC, sign wedding papers at Travel and Tour, and were met by Alex from Cayo Espanto. On the boat ride there, he called ahead with 2 pina coladas. When we arrived, about 10 staff members were on the dock waving to us with ice cold towels and pina coladas.
Our room was gorgeous. We had the smallest room there, but it was perfect for us. Very nicely decorated with mosquito netting over the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in, fresh flowers and a beautiful view. The way the island is laid out you really feel as if you are alone. Trees everywhere. We only saw three other guests our entire two weeks.
The service is outstanding. You are assigned a houseman who takes care of you every day from breakfast until after dinner. You are brought fresh drinks whenever you like, everyone was very accomodating. The menus are wonderful, and if there is anything you want in particular, they do their best to get it for you.
Our third day we were married on our little beach. Iraida and Rosita(guest services) made it even more beautiful than we could have imagined.
We only left the island a handful of times: Deep sea fishing with Hillyboo, spearfishing/snorkeling/picnic with Adolpho and Felix of Cayo Espanto, LobsterFest, and shopping in AC.
The day we went into AC, we also went to Elvi's. They may be nice people, but with their drink prices, I should've gotten drunk on one drink. I switched to water, Bill to beer. Our waitress also overcharged us, but we caught it and she rectified it, no problem. The food was standard, not great, but edible.
Lobsterfest was great. Great food, and a really nice island.
WIll we go back? Certainly. We may try Caye Caulker with the kids in a couple of years, it seemed a little quieter, and more of a family destination than AC, but we may just have to split our time between both.
Thanks for answering all of our questions.
As for the rest of our time in AC -- sitting on our verandah soaking up sun and pina coladas. It doesn't get much better!
