We will be landing at BZE in 28 days! So many questions to ask. We will be spending 15 days in Belize. Our current plan is to visit San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and San Ignacio. Haven't decided how much time to spend in each place. We would like to spend a few days snorkeling and diving, a few days seeing the ruins, falls, and caves. And the rest of our time checking out the area and getting to meet new friends. The first question I would like to ask of you all is for recommendations on where to start. Are there any benefits to starting by taking Maya or Tropic to Ambergris Caye and starting there, or would it be better to take a bus or transport service from BZE to San Ignacio? We will be arriving at BZE before noon. Is there a good strategy to avoid the cruise ship crowds (Wed/Thur)?

We would like to stay close to town while in San Ignacio (Rosas, Casa Blanca, Cahal Pech Village) and maybe try a night further out like Clarissa Falls or Parrots Nest. While in San Pedro, we are looking at Conch Shell, Ruby's, Sunbreeze and anything else close to town. All advice is greatly appreciated. More questions to follow on specific dive sites, ruins, restaurants, and places to relax and meet friendly people! THANK YOU

There are no buses from the airport. It will cost you about $30 U.S. to get to the bus or the watertaxi. On a Taxi. San Ignacio has a lot of $25 a nite places to stay. Casablanca is nice, if you want a cozy private cabana walking distance to town and near the river try The Midas, its about $50 a nite. We stay at The Plaza, next door to Casablanca for $22 a nite, nice large rooms, they have no website but always have room.
The very best tour in that area is the A.T.M. tour. just google it as its short for somthing I cant spell. Its a large cave system that wasnt discovered until the 1980s. Lots of skeletal remains and artifacts dating back to B.C.. Just an incredidable adventure. All day trip through the Mennonite Village and walking through the jungle, Howler Monkeys all about. You have to be pretty fit for this tour. Take the bus to San Ignacio and back, 2 to 2 1/2 hours for $7.00 from Belize City, make sure you go to the Zoo, you can get off the bus and then walk to the road and get back on. I am the Director of the Humane Society on Caye Caulker and not much a fan of Zoos but ours is wonderful. A cheap thing to do.
If you stay on San Pedro be aware it is very expensive for daily items, food etc. Compared to Caye Caulker and San Ignacio . Dont book tours out of San Pedro you will spend alot more. For example if you want to do a snorkle trip to Hol Chan which is directly in front of San Pedro you will pay twice as much as you would from Caye Caulker which is a half hour south.
A big difference between Rosies and The Sunbreeze on San Pedro. Rosies is alot cheaper but it can be noisey as the walls are thin. Sunbreeze is a treat, cost alot more, we stay there a few times a year on special occasions. We love it. The Spindrift is also in that location and quieter as its a cement building. The price falls about halfway in between the two, but if your only going to be in San Pedro for two days, probably enough time mabe treat yourself to the Sunbreeze.
Caye Caulker has lots of affordable rentals, quiet island. Unlike San Pedro no paved roads, cars are illegal, no traffic. I am not dishing San Pedro. If you are a young couple that wants fine dining and clubbing, you wont like Caye Caulker.

Thank you for the info. I think it may be cost effective to get a private transfer to San Ignacio from the airport. Between the cab ride to the bus station and the bus fare for the 2 of us it will be around $50, for under $100 it may be possible to get one of the private transfers to make the trip with a stop at the Zoo on the way. (Does anyone know if the zoo has any storm damage?) Will look into the Plaza. We are not a "young" couple. Late 40's, but both firefighter/paramedics, so we aren't in too bad a shape for the ATM tour. Also hope to do a river trip to Lamanai and possibly Tikal if it is not too dangerous to cross into Guatamala. We are not looking for dancing/clubbing, but would most definitely like to hang out with the locals for a good time. Thank you again for the info.
