We are coming to CC mid December for a one month stay. The apartment we are renting is furnished, but we will need bikes (used), some kitchen items etc.

Does anyone have suggestions as to where to get these items used?

Bikes? you can walk the island in 5 to 10 min. you may need a wheelbarrow to bring home groceries or a back pack. Not sure you will want bikes unless you want them for exercise. you should be Ok just walking.

I think it depends on where you're staying. I would be lost without by bike! I use it to cart laundry and groceries. I'm a bit south of the Village and sometimes I end up having to go in 2 or 3 times in a day. That would be hard for me without a bike. If you are right in the village, maybe you could do without. I don't have any advice on where you can get used ones, though.

I am sure you can rent a bike with a basket and take a pack pack.

There are several places you can rent a bike. If I remember right , about $40BZ a week. You can buy a bike for about $140bz. When you leave CC you could donate the bike to the high school or some similar organization. Or just give it away. I live on the north island and leave my bike on the south island. It makes life much easier.

I love this idea...we stayed at Seadreams 2 years ago for 2 weeks and were very lucky to be able to use the bikes provided by the hotel...this April we will be visiting for three weeks, staying at CayeReef...we will definitely buy a couple of bikes and donate them to one of the schools...what terrific idea!

I checked bike prices on CC this summer at $250 BZ. Can they be bought in BZ city for $140? I have been in contact with OA and we are considering letting them use the bikes for volunteers while we are not on the island. Renting them for 4 weeks is fiscally out of the question since we paid $60 BZ each for one week in Feb..

I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have for shops either on CC or in BZ city.

We bought bikes at Madeline's but they were expensive. We needed 4 so we got a good discount but that was awhile ago. I would check with Molly there for current pricing. We wanted to keep the $$ on the island but you can also get them at Quan's in BC. You should be able to bring them back on the water taxi if they are boxed. Or else ship them over on Trickster.

I have seen them on the water taxi before. not sure if they are still allowing this?

If I remember right it was Quan's but it was also over a year ago. Haven't gone looking to buy another bike in awhile. I also bought a bike a few years ago from Neil and Molly Bradley. There price as I remember it was in the same price range.

You can get used bikes at Friendship convenience store. In December '09 we bought 2 of them for about $100 BZ. They weren't pretty but they got us where we needed to go. In fact, they are STILL getting us around. Ask around at the different shops...you might find a good deal! I know Friendship has some right now they'll sell. They'll also order them new for you.

No..new bikes cant be bought in Belize City for much less than $250.BZ.No way at $140.
Buy new bikes here for the month, you will have no problem selling them before you leave during high season. Buy new at $250. One month old bikes will sell with no effort at all at $150-$175. Do the math and make it easy on yourself.

You dont want to buy used bikes if you dont know how to repair them. The value for the buck is in buying new and selling new. You are looking at spending $50 U.S. or less each for a month of transportaion if you buy new..used is old, rusted bearings, chains, pedals, it can be a nightmare....and may not be able to sell tem to anyone when you leave.

Thanks for the input Debbie. I do know how to repair bikes...I worked in a bike factory for a year, but I would have no tools or the desire to fix them!

Cheapest price on the mainland we found about a month ago was 180 to 190 Bze. We bought two for our friends.

There are bikes to rent outside every the grocery store and other stores

Ask for daily rate and weekly rate and then bargain down then ask, what further reduction for one month cash up front now?' Then show money and get a deal
Try D and M just off front street by football field - doing the above I got mine for $150 Belize dollars for one calendar month (30 days)
When they quote for four weeks ask them for a calendar month ie 31 days to sweeten dea for same rate while showing the $$$
