Ground has been broken for A Mental Health Day Care And Resource Center in Belize City.

The half a million dollar facility will be in Lake Independence at the corner of Vernon and Tibruce Streets.

The centre will assist homeless and mentally ill persons with social support and training for income generation. It will not be a residential centre but it will provide a daily meal, medical referral and recreation for its beneficiaries. It will have the capacity to handle 150 clients on a regular basis.

Kathy Esquivel of and the Belize Mental Health Association explained the role this facility will play.

Kathy Esquivel, Secretary, Belize Mental Health Association
"This is the groundbreaking for a resource center for the homeless mentally ill population and we will be providing social support to those people in terms of a hot meal, hygiene facilities income generation."

Claudina Cayetano, Psychiatrically- Director, Mental Health Program
"What we are trying to do is to provide different types of services, so if someone has an acute problem, they're required to go to the hospital. If someone has a problem that it just chronic, they can go to an outpatient services. But this program is to enhance to be able to add in terms of psychosocial issues, so patients that don't have..... they may have a mental health problem, a mental disorder but in addition to that they have some psychosocial issues, so this program is to enhance that. So when we say psychosocial we are not talking about medication, we are talking about helping these people to rehabilitate them because at times there social skills have deteriorated, they don't have good family support, the sociological wellbeing is also compromised. So this service is to enhance that part."

Kathy Esquivel, Belize Mental Health Association
"Obviously we had to have a piece of land to do it, and the City council leased this piece of land on a long lease to the Mental Health Association, so although it's a good area in its own right the main reason is because of the availability of the land . We do hope to introduce various activities that people who use the center will be able to generate a little income for themselves. Some kinds of projects, it won't be to pay for the center, we have to support that otherwise, but so that they will have money in their pocket to buy little things that they need."

According to an official release, the four thousand square foot building will be governed by rules and regulations and no loitering and nuisance to the neighborhood will be tolerated.

THREE DAY SEMINAR FOCUSING ON CHILDREN UNDERWAY

The state of Belize's children as it relates to education, healthcare, financial support and protection from crime and violence is the focus of seminar at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza Hotel in Belize City. The event called "State of the Nation Children's Conference" includes input from relevant organizations and departments whose roles and responsibilities is children. Love News attended the opening session and spoke with Minister of Human Development, who said that the recent spate of crime against children has prompted the government to take measures that will better serve Belize's future leaders.

Peter Martinez - Minister of Human Development and Social Transformation "Recently we have had an increase in the type of crimes that are being committed against our children. Two weeks ago Cabinet had approved a plan for us to reform the criminal code and that is a positive effort that we are doing because we recognize that even though we have some statutes on the books, what people are looking forward to is more stringent measures in terms of when we catch the perpetrators that we are able to have them pay for the crime they commit and that is appositive area that we are looking at."

Minister Martinez says that focus is also being given to strengthening the prosecutions department to ensure that perpetrators of crime against children are penalized for their deeds.

Ground breaking for Mental Health Center

Ground breaking ceremony

On Monday, the media was invited to the corner of Vernon and Tibruce Street, where the Belize Mental Health Association, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is planning to build a new mental health institution. This specific parcel of land has been leased by the Belize City Council for the facility to be built on.

This new facility has been estimated at $500,000, a

nd the Mental Health Association is planning to equip it to be able to handle about 150 clients. It is being paid for by the Social Investment Fund.

The plan is to turn it into a community-based facility that will provide assistance to homeless and mentally-ill persons. These persons will be facilitated with social support and training to be able to generate their own salaries to support themselves. The plan is that it will not provide residency for its clients however daily meals will be provided to the clients.

The building plan for the facility is that in the next several months, it will be completed and the Mental Health Department, which is a part of the Ministry of Health, will begin a program known as the "psycho-social" care.

In this program, the dependency upon medicine to deal with mental illness is diminished, and the problems that the patient's illness has caused in relation to their social skills will be addressed. It is the hope of the Mental Health Association that the social-skill deterioration could be addressed in a majority of the mental illnesses that Belizeans have faced but ignored.

In the meantime, Monday's ceremony included the ceremonial ground breaking to signify that the process to the completion of the mental health facility has started.
