The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in collaboration with the Republic of China (Taiwan) Technical mission launched a video premiere and workshop today on the production of Taiwanese Guava. The Technical mission has been operational in the country of Belize for twenty years and according to Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize H.E. David Wu, the project was birthed out of them wanting to share the technology with Belizean Farmers.

H.E. David Wu, Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize
This morning is the premiere of a video of a guava growing teaching method. Actually it is for every detail of how to grow Taiwan guava in Belize step by step to teach the farmers who are interested in growing guava here in Belize. This video is an half an hour program; we hope in this way we can share our technology and our experience of growing guava in Belize and as many farmers can learn how to grow guava. It is a fruit and you can have an income of selling this guava and it is also beneficial to the health.

Present at today’s launch was Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Hon. Rene Montero who told us that the project is a great one for Belizean Farmers and that the nutritional content of guava is superb.

Hon. Rene Montero, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries
Today we are promoting the Taiwanese guava, whereby we are promoting it so that farmers can plant it and utilize it so that it can increase their farm income. Guava has a good market, especially with the younger generation in terms of the schools and the high schools; it is sold fresh and we believe that the more diversified sort of plants and fruit trees that we can offer to our farmers; they can be able to be gainfully employed at their farm and also increase their farm income. Also, guava is very nutritious; it has vitamins A, B and C and it is rich in some nutrients.

Plus TV’s mother company Shamax Productions also collaborated in the initiative by producing the 30 minute video which shows farmers how to Propagate, Fertilize, Prune and Bag & Harvest the Guava. Director of Shamax Productions and Plus TV Louis Wade Jr. encouraged the farmers to put the video tutorial into good use.

Hon. Rene Montero
The transfer of information is extremely important to build wealth in a nation and then after that transfer of information, there must be utilization of that information. So if no one goes out and plant guava and produce a good crop, then it is a failure for all of us. So I trust that you will take the video seriously, take this production seriously, and take the training seriously. Those of you who are responsible for disseminating information, let’s get it out there and the tangible result I believe for Taiwan, for us and the Ministry of Agriculture is when we start to eat those guavas and we say, “I learnt it because of the training, I learnt it because of this video, I learnt it because of this.” It becomes worthwhile when we are able to reap the tangible benefits from the work that we have all put in. So we’re in this with you, the Agricultural sector.

Minister Montero also spoke on the wider goal and possibilities of farmers now growing guava in Belize.

Hon. Rene Montero
We have already been distributing these guavas countrywide; we have distributed about two-hundred plants to the north and we have been giving it on an annual basis to our farmers in the surrounding villages. So the farmers are already planting it and some of them are already harvesting. The end goal is first to promote it and for the farmers to start to plant it and also to utilize it and commercialize it first here locally and once we can produce locally and we have exhausted our local market, then perhaps we can think about exporting to our neighboring countries, especially to Mexico. Also, guava has not only a fresh market, but also it can be used in pickles, jellies and it can be used in restaurants and to be offered as an alternative exotic fruit.

According to Ambassador Wu, the guava initiative is a trial project and based on its success; the Technical Mission will consider implementing other projects in areas of food processing and horticulture. A copy of the video can be obtained from the Taiwan Technical Mission which is located in Central Farm, the Taiwanese Embassy in Belize City and The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries office in the City of Belmopan.

Guava Production video launched

Taiwanese guavas

On Wednesday November 16th, the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Technical Mission of the Republic of China Taiwan (ROC) launched a video on how to produce hybrid guavas in Belize. The launching was held at the University of Belize Central Farm Campus, in the Cayo District.

Present at the event was His Excellency David Wu, the Taiwan Ambassador to Belize, the Minister of Agriculture the Hon. Rene Montero, officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, Farmers and other invited guests.

The objective of the event was to promote the nutritional value of guavas and the requirements for its production. The video will serve as a tool for people, who want to venture into commercializing guava for the local and export market.

Taiwanese guava was introduced into Belize over ten years ago by Taiwanese immigrants. This fruit is rich in Vitamin A, B and C. Through successes by the Taiwanese immigrants, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Taiwan Technical Mission merged together to produce a documentary and training manual for farmers, who are interested in acquiring the skills to promote this fruit crop.
