Invitation for 100 of the best Belizean students to visit the new Planetarium in Chetumal

Belmopan, Belize, 21 November 2011.- The Mexican Embassy invites 100 of the best Belizean students for a trip to visit the new “Yook´ol Kaab” Planetarium and the Museum of the Mayan Culture in Chetumal, Mexico. The aim of the trip is to expand the knowledge in astronomy and Mayan culture among Belizean students.

All schools in Belize are encouraged to nominate their best students born between 1998 and 2001 in order to participate in the selection process. The day trip will take place on Thursday, December 15th, 2011. It is free and will include transportation and food, entry tickets and guided visits to the Planetarium and the Museum of the Mayan Culture. They will be accompanied by Belizean teachers. The Embassy will facilitate Mexican immigration and customs procedures.

The newly inaugurated “Yook´ol Kaab” (our universe) Planetarium in Chetumal is a high-tech space designed center to encourage studies in science and technology, and is an excellent opportunity for Belizean students to discover firsthand the fascinating world of astronomy and science in general.

Interested schools should apply to the Embassy by filling out the appropriate formats provided by the Embassy and send them to institutodemexico@embamex.bz before the deadline on December 2nd, 2011, at 2:00 pm.

The 100 students, as well as the teachers that will accompany them will be selected by the Mexican Embassy in public draws that will be held during the piano concerts on December 3rd and 4th at the Bliss Center in Belize City and the George Price Centre in Belmopan.

The Embassy will report the results to the winning schools on December 7th. From that date and until 2:00 pm on December 12th, schools will have to send a second format, along with a picture passport size of the selected students.

The trip will take place on Thursday, December 15th, 2011. Schools will take their selected students to the Institute of Mexico in Belize City, or to the Mexican Embassy in Belmopan, at the time that will be directed.

100 best students to planetarium

Marcelino Miranda

In a similar fashion to Santa, the Mexican Embassy is also making a list and checking it twice. But instead of who’s naughty or nice, the Embassy is looking for the brightest and the best to visit the new Yook ol Kaab Planetarium and the Museum of the Maya Culture in Quintana Roo. According to Marcelino Miranda, Press Officer for the Embassy of Mexico, the embassy will select one hundred of the best Belizean students to take on an educational and impressive tour across the border.

Marcelino Miranda, Press Officer, Embassy of Mexico

“This trip is going to be completely free of cost and will be run by the Mexican embassy. It will include transportation, food and the entrance and guided tours to the planetarium and to the museum. That is the reasons we are asking all schools to nominate their best students.”

Jose Sanchez

“That’s what I was going to ask. How do you select the best?”

Marcelino Miranda

“Yes we are going to select with the schools. We are asking the schools to nominate their best students born between 1998 and 2001 to send those there with the special format that the Mexican Embassy is providing. And then we are going to run two public draws to select the hundred students. This is going to be a very good opportunity to go to the new planetarium. This planetarium was recently opened in Chetumal. It has the best and latest in technology in terms of planetariums and also the main purpose of this trip is to encourage students to learn more and to study more about science, about astronomy, mathematics and also about the Mayan culture. We think that the students are going to be the future scientists of this country and it is very important to encourage them to know more about these fields.”

Jose Sanchez

“Based on the age range, you are targeting primary schools?”

Marcelino Miranda

“Yes. Basically it is roughly between ten and thirteen year olds. So it is going to be very important for the schools to contact the Mexican embassy and to send the nominations with the special format—it is very simple. They can get those formats from the Mexican embassy and we are expecting to have those hundred of the best Belizean students to Chetumal.”

The trip will be on Thursday, December fifteenth. Schools that are interested in entering the draw must apply by two p.m. on December second.

These one hundred students must be exemplary both academically and in their behavior at school. The trip is aimed at giving these youngsters an opportunity to expand their knowledge in astronomy and the Mayan culture. Mexico's Ambassador to Belize, Mario Velasquez told us more:

Mario Velasquez, Mexico's Ambassador to Belize
"This initiative appeared at the moment by the governor of Quintana Roo. He invited me for the opening of this planetarium. It's the first one in Chetumal. The best we can do is to bring students; it's an award for them. It going to be marvelous. When I was a child I would have like this opportunity. When you see the planetarium for the first time - it's incredible to see the universe, to see it very close. To see the planets with a telescope its marvelous. They will have special glasses to seeing the universe during the day. The Mexican transportation will be here, the autobus have air condition, bathroom and of course teachers will be with the children, they won't be alone. The parents can be assure that their children will be in very good hands because we will have nurses on the autobus if whatever happen. Sometimes when you travel you get dizzy; we will have everything for that. In Mexico they will go to the museum of the Maya culture and they will have meals. The chamber of Commerce in Chetumal will take care of them. They are preparing special Mexican meals for the children. Everybody in Chetumal is waiting in open arms to receive the Belizean children and we are encouraging the schools to send us their information as soon as possible because we will be closed."

The trip will be held on Thursday December 15th. ADO buses from Mexico will be transporting the students to and from Chetumal. The Embassy is still receiving applications. All schools in Belize are encouraged to nominate their best students born between 1998 and 2001 in order to participate in the selection process. Schools can contact the Mexican Embassy at 223-1408, 223-0193 or 223-0194.

Mexican Immigration in Chetumal has announced that it will facilitate the crossing of the Belizean students across the Mexican border - and they won't even have to pay the 10 dollar mordida!
