Here's an amazing video of an orphaned short-tailed fruit bat being hand-raised by dedicated animal lovers at Bat World Sanctuary.
The mother of the tiny bat, known as "Lil' Drac," was rescued after a zoo closure. The stress of this transfer caused her to abandon her baby. So Lil' Drac was raised by Bat World Sanctuary volunteers in their headquarters in Mineral Wells, Texas.
Fascinating to see how such a tiny creature can be raised by humans.
The tiny bats that live in Belize (and elsewhere in Central America) are about that size. I found one on the floor of the shower stall where we stayed on our last visit to Belize. I picked it up with a washcloth to escort it outside to a tree trunk. The little fella latched onto the cloth with a very toothy grin. After hanging a while on the tree trunk, he flew away.
