Had an email from AA this morning. Doesn't seem to be headline news but wondering how this affects San Pedro and our visitors if at all?

Dear AAdvantage® Member,

As you may know, on Tuesday, November 29, American Airlines filed for reorganization under Chapter 11. We took this action as part of our efforts to secure our long-term success in delivering the highest standards in air travel. We are committed to meeting your travel needs with outstanding customer service and safety, and it will be business as usual at American throughout our reorganization process. More than 80,000 people at American appreciate your loyalty and look forward to continuing to serve you.

We want to assure you that your AAdvantage® miles are secure. The AAdvantage miles that you've earned are yours and will stay yours, subject to usual policies, until you choose to redeem them for a great award with us. Likewise, your elite qualifying miles and your elite status, including lifetime status granted under the Million MilerSM program is secure and remains intact. You will continue to earn miles through all our existing AAdvantage participating companies and you will be able to redeem those miles for the same great awards - flights, upgrades, car rentals and hotels just to name a few. And, throughout the coming year, we will be adding even more opportunities to earn miles, as well as new ways to redeem those miles.

American is honoring all tickets and reservations as usual, and making normal refunds and exchanges. And, we intend to maintain a strong presence in domestic and international markets. As we and all airlines routinely do, we will continue to evaluate our operations and service, assuring that our network is as efficient and productive as possible. Additionally, relationships with our oneworld Alliance and other codeshare partners are continuing to provide you with opportunities to earn and redeem miles for travel to hundreds of destinations worldwide, and we are honoring all tickets and reservations for travel on our partner airlines as usual. For information about American's reorganization process, please visit AA.com/restructuring.

Even more importantly, we remain committed to providing a superior customer experience with a focus on delivering what our customers value most - the newest fleet with our upcoming aircraft deliveries, network strength in the important cities of the world and world-class products, service and technology.

American Airlines has a proud history, and we will have a successful future. All of us on the American team thank you for your loyalty and we look forward to welcoming you aboard soon.

Sincerely,

We have seen a number of businesses rearranging their structures - I don't see this as being a problem. Maybe in a few years if the restructuring doesn't result in profits, but for now it looks like business as usual.

Continental and United amalgamated and Continental will basically cease to exist pretty soon I guess - but it is still business as usual as far as customers go.

AA is the ONLY legacy airlines NOT to have filed for Chapter 11 before today.

It's the best thing for them. The can reorganize and restructure their mountainous debt.

The day to day operations will not change.

The people that really get screwed in the restructuring shuffles are the employees.
Imagine chapter 11 filed just before Christmas, they might not lose a days work but will soon be working for a company that doesn't owe them anything in the way of benefits or holiday pay.
73,401 employees X any number of benefits/bonus/holiday pay = enough to put a smile on the CEO's face and a big bump in his Golden Parachute.

AA is restructuring as they are joining with Westjet. They are probably adding 1st class to the Westjet planes since none of them have the option on there planes. And all Westjet employees are part owners and have shares in the company. Hopefully the GREAT customer service from Westjet rubs of on the AA staff as I have found them rude and arrogant most of the time. Always fly with Continental when going anywhere they fly to instead of other companies.

Westjet has a "codeshare agreement" with AA. They haven't joined AA. They have agreements as well with KLM and Cathay Pacific

Your AA miles work with these airlines, and you can fly combination airline itineraries.

American Airlines 'bruk;' will employees suffer?

AMR Eagle Holding Corporation announced earlier today that the company and its subsidiaries including American Eagle and American Airlines (A.A.) filed voluntary petitions for Chapter eleven reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. The news coincides with a change of the CEO of the Board of Directors of AMR Corporation. Thomas W. Horton replaces Gerard Arpey who chose retirement. The worry in Belize and across the USA is about job security. News Five contacted Luis Alpuche of American Airlines and he presented us with press releases from the company's headquarters. A.A. maintains that its planes will continue to hover the friendly skies. There have been several reports in the USA about the bankruptcy.

Worldwide, many A.A. frequent flyers are members of AAdvantage miles program. A.A. sent out emails to members to inform them that the miles they earned from travelling are secure.
