Hot Mama's wins scorching award

For most Belizeans, no meal is complete if it's not topped with hot sauce and luckily, there are several local brands to choose from. But one has bragging rights for winning first place and taking the gold in the condiments category of the first annual Gourmet Products Awards. Hot Mama's Pepper Sauce earned international recognition for its Sweet Pepper Sauce at the award ceremony, which was recently held in Los Angeles. According to a release from Hot Mama's, the Gourmet Products Awards recognizes companies, products and services that stand out in quality, innovation and special merit. There are forty-three categories including condiments, confections, dairy, oils, baby products, beverages and snacks. Hot Mama's Belize operates out of Unitedville, Cayo and has been producing hot sauces for over eight years.

BELIZEAN PRODUCT WINS INTERNATIONAL AWARD

A Belizean product has won an international award. Hot Mama's today announced that its Sweet Pepper Sauce has won the prestigious Gourmet Product Award. Love News spoke by telephone with Wilana Oldham, from Hot Mama's Belize.

"We won first place gold for best condiment with the Gourmet Product Award in the US. I think what happened is that we were at the Fancy Food Show in Washington DC this year and I think somebody came along and picked up one of our products which is the sweet pepper sauce and made a recommendation to the Gourmet Product Award Company about the sauce and so they approached me about submitting an application for the contest which we did and then eventually they requested that we send product to five different entities, these were actually judges. These judges were in different types of businesses, one was the International Culinary Institute and some were stores and what not and they got to taste the product and we were chosen first place gold winner we are so happy about this."

Oldham says that the award has motivated her staff to continue to strive for premium quality and flavor in Hot Mama's products and looks forward to future food competitions.

"You know it's very important to get recognition for the work you're doing so it is a nice boost to not only the morale of the employees but also it motivates us to get the product out there more into the public because we want them to understand that hey, there are people out there who have tried the product and realize how incredibly good it is and there s no reason you should be eating it yourself. We are hoping that it will translate into more public awareness and of course the ultimate goal is more sales."

Hot Mama's Company, which is located in Unitedville in the Cayo district currently has nine full time employees. Oldham says that come the new year, the company plans on hiring more workers to facilitate expansion.
