Last year - according to the official figures - there were 129 murders recorded in Belize - a record number - which gave this small country the dubious distinction of having the sixth highest murder rate in the world.
But - cross your fingers - with two weeks left to go in 2011 - the murder figures are expected to be down significantly this year - thanks largely to the gang truce in early September.

Figures released by the police department show that up to the end of October, 2011 was outpacing 2010 in murders.

2011 had recorded 112 murders up to the end of October, compared to 106 in the previous year.

That disparity of six despite the fact that September 2011 recorded only seven murders, whereas September 2010 had recorded 19 murders.

Yet still even with that sharp September downturn, 2011 was on pace to outmatch 2010.

But November 2011 was the equalizer: this year, it recorded five murders, while in November 2010 there were thirteen murders.

And, so far for the first two weeks of December 2011, there have been two murders; while in the entire December 2010 - there were ten murders.

So, the total so far for 2011 is - unofficially - 119 murders - which, if the trend holds - will be down significantly from last year. Of course, December still has 17 days and nights to go, so let's all hope the peace holds.

Up to the end of October, 2011, robbery and burglary were two other major crimes that showed increases over 2010.

Police release annual crime stats

The crime statistics for the period January to October are out. According to the Belize Police Departmentís release, the number of murders at the end of October stood at one hundred and twelve, a small increase compared to one hundred and six during the same period in 2010. For the crimes of rape and carnal knowledge, there was also a small increase compared to last year. While burglaries and thefts are up, there was a notable decrease of forty-four robberies in comparison to last year. The stats show that while murders have increased, there is a decrease in the number of arrests being made. Only carnal knowledge and burglary show a slight increase in the number of persons arrested. In terms of the drugs, including marijuana, crack, cocaine, heroin, methane and crack pipes, there has been a decrease across the board. Records show that in 2010 police arrested twenty-nine more persons than they did this year. According to the release, the number of confiscated firearms fell by one, while ammunition marked a sharp increase of one hundred and seventy-four seized. The number of firearms stolen has remained the same at forty. In terms of the arrests made for firearms, the number has stayed the same, while a marked increase of twenty-seven persons arrested for possession of ammunition is on record. Again, we note that the statistics from the police are for reported crimes from the period of January to October of this year. The statistics are a mixed bag and it appears that the gang truce may be holding in place in respect of violent crimes. According to our estimation the number of murders committed this year stands at one hundred and seventeen, which is four less than it was at mid December 2010.

2011 Crime Statistics for Belize in

Yesterday police released their crime statistics for 2011- for January to October, that is! The report shows that ALL serious crimes are up as compared to this time last year except robbery which is down by 10%. Also, if the trend holds, this year will be another record setting year for murders as Last year by October there were 106 reported murders, this year there are already 112; and that's because last year's record was a 25% increase over 2009. Arrests for murders remain dismal. In 2010 only half of all murders had an accompanying arrest. This year, it is even worse as out of the 112 murders recorded by the police, only 43 arrests were recorded; a 10% drop in murder arrests bringing this to 40%. This is an uncomfortable reality for Belize's crime scene as only 3% of those arrested go on to conviction. The crime most frequent committed in Belize is Burglaries. So far, 919 Burglaries have been reported. Arrests made for burglaries only increased by 2 over last year to 226. There has also been a noticeable decrease in the number of firearms seized as compared to 2009 when 191 weapons were removed from the streets. Last year, 2010, only 134 were removed, and this year the statistics show the same trend as last year. Of note is that last year, 2010, police also confiscated less than half the number of ammunition as in 2009 when they removed 3924 rounds off the streets. This year's totals to October are only 174 rounds more last year at this time. In the area of drugs, 2010 was a stellar year for the police as they confiscated some 33,900 grams of cocaine and increased their Heroine confiscation from 4 grams to 682 grams. This year, cocaine confiscation is down to 12,742 grams, but we must advise that last week's cocaine bust of 111 kilos will not be figured into these totals until the end of the year. This year there were less cannabis confiscation and half as much weed plants destroyed. Also there have been no heroine or methamphetamine confiscations for this year.
