I was perusing the TA forum and read two interesting posts: one said that the cheese available in Belize is "nasty" and expensive, and that bringing cheese and meats into Belize is illegal. Not that I'm looking to bring in a suitcase full of food, but maybe a bar or two of our favorite cheese for snacking if possible. If it is truly illegal then definitely not.

We also plan to pick up some liquor at the duty free, specifically rums made in Belize. Recommendations?

Thanks! Only 12 more sleeps until we arrive! grin

The cheese made in Belize is Nasty! (in my opinion) but you can get many different types of cheese that is imported. Wine de Vine also has a great selection of some fancy cheeses as well.

If you want Belizean Rum, then you don't need to get it at the duty free. (There is no duty on it) You can get it at just about every corner store or supermarket and it is not expensive. I would also recommend a visit to the rum and cigar house on middle street.

Thanks for the ideas. Anyone know if it's illegal to bring cheese with us?

We bring cheese with us and have never had a problem, have only been asked by customs if we were bringing liquor or meat

As long as your cheese is packed in its original heat sealed packaging, you should be OK. I've never had a problem. I don't bother with that anymore tho', cuz I'm OK with the selection on the island.

You can bring in meat, I bring in 6 to 10 steaks on a regulare basis. More than that it may look like resale. I bring in Rib steaks, I used to be a meat cutter at Safeway. Never had a problem, you must have the USDA inpection stamp on the meat or the packaging, your local grocery store will help you with that. I declare it, I show it to customs so they dont find it, tell them its for a celebration and have never had a problem.

Custums asking if you are bringing in meat does not mean you cant bring it. You need to declare it and have it inspected.
