Good Bye BC's Beach Bar?
|
|
Since I moved to Belize over 5 years ago, there have been rumors that one of San Pedro's most popular beach bars was going to move or shut down. The leased prime property where they are situated is just too good. Condominiums or a hotel were bound to come.
A few days ago a giant sign went up on the lot. It's a bit depressing. What is better than a simple wooden palapa bar with cheap drinks, great bartenders and a steady group of regulars (it's pretty much the Belizean equivalent of "Cheers") directly on the beach? Not much.
Here is the sign. (I don't see BC's in this drawing.)
The sign is almost as big as the bar.
The only solace I can take is that the proposed condominiums are priced very high (starting at $599k) and this project could take a WHILE to get going.
But from what I hear, the owner is scouting out new properties (moving northward.) Wouldn't it be nice if she could take the whole building with her? I can only imagine that when she does move, there is going to be one HUGE blow-out farewell party. We should probably all start preparing for that one.

The owner isn't evil, in fact the owner has leased this prime beach land to BC's for 14 years.
Ask Charlene how much she pays for her lease. If she's willing to tell you, you will be absolutely stunned by the answer.

Why is it anyone's business how much someone pays for a lease..unless you are planning on assuming it...why would anyone ask that question?

I'm guessing Hon was referring to her opinion on whether or not the owner of the leased parcel is 'evil', or not, depending upon the agreed upon rental rate of the premises. But then, again, I could be mistaken. You are exactly right. The owners are a hardworking Belizean family who have lived on Ambergris Caye for many generations. They have been planning this project for years with Charlene's full knowledge of what was eventually going to happen.

I guess it's inevitable that BC's will go the way of Coconut's beach bar and the old Palapa Bar, but it's still going to be sad if and when it actually happens. There's nothing like returning to the old bars after being gone for 11 months and having the bartender set your drink in front of you without having to ask "what'll it be."

The owner has some prime beach land further up the coast too.
The owner isn't evil, in fact the owner has leased this prime beach land to BC's for 14 years.
The land could have been sold hundreds of times over during those years.
BC's was built there with the understanding that is was a temporary site.
BC's has been at 2 other locations before this one. Maybe some people just don't realize the full history.
I imagine if Charlene is up to it then BC's might rise again in a new location some time soon.
The building was put together so as to be easy to take apart and relocate when the time came. It would appear the time is getting near.

Thought there was a 3 Story max height for buildings in town core? That went out of the window a few years ago Realised it was the case out of town and wasn't being misheivous, for a change, but I didn't realise this had changed in Town Core. Perhaps I should open my eyes a bit as maybe the Mayors new (stalled) project is four stories too?!?!?!

I was refering to the little square Beach Bar that was just to the South of the present bar. It was run by Margie and Ada years ago. They were the first bartenders we got to know. Still good friends today.

It would be nice to tear down the old Hammock House and put the entire BC's bar there. Hey, a guy can dream...:) Thats a good idea tho.

krehfish, the best night on the island ever in recent years was a Sunday, February 13th (I think), 2005 at the Hammock House. Skinny and the boys were jamming, Wonder Woman was slinging the booze and the upstairs was packed with skydivers and other visitors. The sun was going down slowly, giving off a warm, brilliant and colorful sunset. Some of the guys had jumped into Belize City for a demo onto the soccer field for the final game. The BDF flew them back out and they circled the bar and a bunch of them got out at about 3,000 feet and swooped in behind the bar. The crowd went wild, the band played louder (including a pretty drunk jumper on bass guitar), the drinks got stronger and somehow we all made it back to the Sunbreeze by way of Daniel Nunez's boat unscathed, except for a bit of liver and brain damage:)
Some nights on the island are just magical...:)I miss that bar.

Reaper: it was a 4th of July nite. Who was the Journey tribute band guy that did parasailing? Nice guy-looked like Seve Ballisteros. Anyway, he and Skinny and that jammin' drummer-lady from CA(or at least her school teacher sister was from CA) plus others-geez.
