Have you noticed a few workers around town plastering cement blocks in the corner of streets and have asked yourself what is going on? Well don’t question yourselves anymore, the answer is this: Mayor Elsa Paz is highlighting her accomplishments with street plaques.

“As my Mayoral term comes to an end I have decided to place these plaques all over town,” stated Mayor Paz. “They will state what was done and under who’s administration so that everybody remembers what Elsa Paz did for San Pedro Town.”

If she has used public funds for this project she should be sued to recover the money. She reports 2 years of deficits and does this with our money. Even worse Danny Guerrero has told us all what a wonderful Mayor Elsa has been. Pay attention folks, vote Independent for Mayor. Mel Paz is an honest person. WE NEED THAT.

...is she going to put up plaques in say, San Mateo, South Beach, etc and have them read "Proudly allowed to happen during my tenure as mayor." Fear not Elsa, no one here is really going to forget what you've done for the island, you should be so lucky.

What is she going to build next, the Spruce Goose?

Ahhh! reminiscent of the Egyptian pharaohs...monuments and edifices to their lifetime of "accomplishments" ...if the Caye is lucky enough to have her succesors (may their deeds be more worthy) remain true to this Egyptian tradition, these obelisks will be defaced and her hieroglyphs replaced with their own...memories in dust only...

I believe you have to be a permanent resident to vote -- and that takes being in the country for a minimum of a year (plus other requirements). Perhaps someone can confirm.

Elsa you don't have to put the plaques around town so that the town doesn't forget you. Sadly we will never forget you as you're going down in the history books as simply the worst mayor that this island has ever had. Please don't forget to put in the tombstones that you personally helped Dave Mitchell,as you said so yourself, get all his permissions for his projects, thereby compromising the enviromental viability of this whole island. In 9years no money for sports,no financial report,GBE,Sugar Caye, councillors hustling land and everything else,no master plan, family members using town board golf carts for personal use, where is the bridge money and the list goes on PLEASE put these accomplishments on the plaques.

Re. Commonwealth Citizens was, and possibly still is, different. I voted having been here less than a year but this was a few moons back. I'd be intrigued to know what the rule/law is these days. This was definately just local elections though, so it could be some local chicanery.

Town Council Erecting Monuments in Town

Many people in the community have noticed the cement tombstone-shaped monuments being erected in various parts of the town. According to the San Pedro Town Council, the monuments are being constructed to highlight Mayor Elsa Paz’s accomplishments during her three terms in office.

The monuments are being placed at the corner of most cobblestoned streets, at various parks around town and next to the Sir Barry Bowen Bridge. All monuments will have an inlayed marble tile with inscribed pictures and the names of all seven council members of the SPTC for the period 2003 to 2012. Beside the pictures on the tiles, each accomplishment will have the date that it was completed with the words “Built under the leadership of Mayor Elsa Paz and the UDP Town Council 2003-2012.”

According to a source at the town council, the SPTC is paying for the materials and labor (labor is at $975 so far) for the erection of 19 monuments. The approximate cost for each monument is estimated at $150 and each marble tile was bought for at a price of $60 each. If you do the math this puts the project cost at more than $5,000. Many residents are asking if the construction of the monuments is a priority for the SPTC, especially when the recent Mayor’s budget report states that the council is operating at a deficit of over $300,000.

The San Pedro Sun attempted to get a comment from the Town Council’s Administrator, Patricia Tillett but we were told that she was in a meeting. To date Tillett has not returned our call.
