I've lived in San Pedro for almost 2 years now and I'm thinking of getting a part-time job! I've just recently become a resident, so I don't need a work permit!
I'm a qualified Dental Nurse with over 20 years experience, but have also worked part-time in a school in the UK!
I'm looking for something maybe a couple of days a week (Monday and Wednesday preferably - but can be flexible)I'm honest, reliable, flexible and Scottish! Can't speak Spanish...
Not sure if bar work is my thing, but if anyone thinks they may have something that I can do, let me know smile

Thanks

Question? When you got your residency it is stamped in your passport what your occupation is. If you got your residency under the retirement status, you cant work at all. It is extremley hard to get a working residency for being a nurse, just curious....you dont want to find yourself with an order to leave the country.

Just read your post again and sounds like you best pay a bit of attention. You could never have gotton a working residency for being a nurse and a bartender....you are scamming here, I do take it personally, I respect what alot of us ex-pats have gone through to work here, live here and respecting the country. You my dear are not being honest.

The person posting this is real. Not a scammer in fact her screen name is her real name. She has gotten her residency. Her trade is as a Dental Nurse has all her UK licences. However she knows that the Dentists on this island work alone without the help of an assistant. So she is looking for other jobs that she may be qualified for that is part time. Since you don't know her you also don't know she has been coming to the country for 15 yrs before moving here full time and that her family has a small resort on the mainland. She also has kids in school here and owns property here. She went for her residency they proper way and did not pay someone to get it for her. So she does live here and respects the country. Sorry if I sound like I am being rude. But Lorna is a personal friend.

I can confirm that Lorna and purdygirl are correct. Lorna was a dental nurse prior to living here. She has lived here for 2 years without working while she got her papers sorted out. She is a home owner, has children enrolled in school and she is one of the nicest, sweetest, most personable folks I have met in a while.

Lorna and her family have been established in Belize for decades. They have always worked above board and contributed to the country.

Wow Cooper, I am dismayed with your assessment of Lorna. She has more than done her share of earning her stripes here in Belize.

Sorry, but lots of very nice people dont understand Belize laws. I was not meaning she is not a qualified good intention person. However if she has a working residency..it will be specific as to the work she can do. If she has a retirment residency she cant work at all. It is not possible to have a working residency as a health care provider and a bartender so either she needs to know her laws better to avoid problems, if she does know the laws then she is trying to break them. Very true I do not know her. I do know good people that have been ordered to leave the Country for working as bartenders when they have residency. Certain jobs are held for Belizeans as it should be. I would think a residency allowing Bartending would be hard to get.
I apologize to the woman posting, I did sound negative, I hope she learns the laws regarding her residency, she just sounded so uninformed, it sounded like a bit of a scam...again sorry..

Okay I am confused. I was lead to believe that once you became a permenant resident you were able to work without a permit. I have not heard of a working residency but again I have only visited Belize and am looking to move there in the near future. Also the few expat bartenders that I met were residents. They did say that you could not get a work permit to be a bartender. However as residents they could work the bar.
I know that this may be highjacking the thread but can someone correct me on the difference between working residency and permenant residency.

You can pretty much work at any field that you are qualified to work in once you have permanent residency status.

In most cases I think you might need to be a citizen to be a tour guide.

Just read Cooper's post. Work permits allow you to work in specific fields. Full residency status allows you to work in just about any field. Retirement residency status does not allow you to work.

With full residency status you can be a bartender. If someone was kicked out of the country for bartending with full residency status then there was a lot more to the story than you were privacy to.

Cooper I think you misunderstood what Lorna said. She said she is a qualified dental nurse so could work in that capacity. And although she could work as a barmaid, she would prefer not to. It might be a bit of a cultural miscommunication. I know what she meant since I know her and understand the way she speaks.

After becoming a permanent resident, go to the nearest office of the Social Security Board and get registered.

You'll get your photo taken and be issued a Social Security card.

I didn't ask for this, but mine says, "Valid for Employment".
The stamp in my passport says, "Retiree".

The SSB should be able to answer any questions regarding employment.

Not true, you are specified to work at a certain position. I am about done with this post. Just a few more things, my residency stamp reads artist. My neighbors reads Business Woman, what a great choice that was, as she can do just about anything. Neighbor on the othersides residency reads designer, he is a contractor and has lots of opurtunity on his. If you are from the U.K. you also have more options. This is why I get mad, yes its true you can do anything you want with residency, but you are not following the laws, Very little chance immigration will bust you, they are not spending much time checking documents. The few cases I know of where people have been arrested for working outside thier residency are when they are turned in by pissed off Belizeans. My point here is this is not our country, Amanda actually believes you can do anything you want once you have residency and thats just wrong, thats the I have entitlement
factor. I spend so many hours working a non profit for the community, I feel so blessed to be able to live here, and I try so hard to be non evasive to the locals, it is thier country, and again, No you cant work just any job because you have residency..knowone will probably catch you...guess its a issue for the guidelines you want to live with.
The poor woman the made this post, to her I am sorry, but all tthe other post I am amazed you dont know the laws here. Some of you have been here for a long time. What you can do with residency and what the laws say you should do are extremly different, then its up to you to do the right thing.

Lorna I wish you well. I respect that you post under your real name, and that you have invested your time, your energy, your good will in our community.

I think my residency also said "businesswoman". Wish it had said "millionaire". (I'm still looking for that job - if you know of any openings, let me know!).

If one really wanted to tend bar, I'd think "counselor" or "consultant" might cover it ..... yes, that was a joke. Trying to lighten the vibe a bit.

Again I am saying sorry for making the woman that posted this feel I am attacking her, she p.m.me I will post reply below. I cant say I handled this wrong any more times, all of us get passionate about things prior to thinking. However the law is the law. I was the last person in Belize offered a residency as an artist, next came my husband,It was like pulling teeth We know the laws, we also know the laws are only inforced when convienant. Or you are turned in...reply below....

I am so sorry that is true I did come over a bit hard. I have lived here for many years, and after rereading my post I am ashamed that it seemed I was attacking you. Yes the posters supported you. The fact however is it seems none of them know the laws of residency. I was not slandering anyone but you really dont want to be the one person that gets busted for not knowing the laws. It does not happen often, but its unusual for a person to put out a post of illigal content. Like you did. I know you did nothing wrong on purpose, but residency is restricted to a very certain occupation. no it is not inforced. Only rarely do people get in truoble for it. I just think of the U.S. and all its citizens bitching about illigal residents, then the U.S. Citizens come here and do the same shit. This country is not as strong as the U.S. We have to leave space for the Belizeans. Just because laws are not inforced here, and money talks does not mean you can ignore the jobs that are taken away from Belizeans. Again no reference to you.

Ok, so this all happened over the weekend. I dont know again how to say I am sorry, I appologize and now I have to say I am wrong. I talked to Belmopan, and 2 years ago they stopped putting occupations on residencies. It was to hard to control and restrict a residents occupation. As the officer explained if a person got his residency as a student, he would have to remain a student and that was part of the oversight and change. A retired person is allowed certain oppurtunites a non retired person gets and they are not allowed to work. They may however draw income, that is not taxed from outside Belize, such as business run via internet etc.... Feel free to continue making ugly comments to me, I deserve it, things do change.

Sooooo - just for the record for all the confused people out there:

After you have 'served' your one year in Belize and have applied for your permanent residency it takes approx 10 months to get your stamp in your passport (or it did for me and various others that applied at the same time)Once you have your permanent residency stamped on your passport you can work in almost any job you want (apart from tour guides I believe)
I went to Social Security and a week later I had my Social Security card!
I am now a free agent to work in anything that I want in Belize! I do NOT want to work in a bar! That is what my 1st post said - you must of misread it.....

Thanks everyone for all your comments :-)
