Police still leads in south, San Pedro surprise in north

At the end of Week 3 in the Premier League of Belize 2012 opening tournament, pre-season favorite Police United remain undefeated to lead the south (S) zone; while San Pedro Seadogs, who were considered a questionable entrant in the tournament, are surprise leaders in the north (N), though tied in points along with San Felipe Barcelona and F.C. Belize.

There were 3 Saturday night games out west. At the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan, (S) Police United kept their unblemished record intact, shutting out home-standing Belmopan Bandits, 1-nil, on a second half goal by Devon Makin at the 79th minute. Meanwhile, at the Norman Broaster Stadium, (N) visiting Juventus also shocked the home squad World FC by a 3-nil score, with all goals coming from Osmar Duran (23, 50 & 58 min). And further west at the Marshalleck Stadium, (S) the home team was again on the losing end, as visiting San Ignacio United clipped Hankook Verdes, 2-1, with both San Ignacio goals by Victor Morales (6 & 76 min). Verdes escaped the shutout on an injury time strike by Julian Maldonado (90+4 min).

On Sunday, up north at the San Felipe Football Field, (N) it was San Felipe Barcelona, 1-nil, over visiting Belize Defence Force, on a goal by Gabriel Perez (50 min). Down south at the Placencia Football Field, (S) home standing Placencia Assassins were taking no prisoners, as they demolished winless Paradise/Freedom Fighters, 5-1, with goals by Elias Donaire (13 min), Ashley Torres (20 min), Dennis Serano (34 min), Zerrick Torres (47 min) and Rollin Burgess (82 min). The lone tally for the Freedom Fighters came in injury time from Wilmer Garcia (90+4 min). And here at the MCC Grounds, visiting San Pedro Seadogs played to a 0-0 draw with F.C. Belize. San Pedro’s rookie midfield/striker Jesse Smith unleashed two long-range missiles that demanded the best of F.C. Belize goalie Elroy “Zabble” Rowley, who managed to push both over the crossbar.

The biggest match-up this weekend has to be the South clash Saturday night at the MCC between two undefeateds, Police United and San Ignacio United.
