In his New Years 2012 message Dean Barrow told Belizeans that basically the year 2011 was a good one and then he went on to speak about his Governments plans for the year 2012. But what Barrow forgot to tell the Belizean public is when his administration will keep their promise of maintaining the price of fuel below the $8.00 mark and that effective January 1st 2012 the price of fuel would see an increase.

Yes, you heard right, since January 1st consumers have been paying more for a gallon of fuel. The new increase in fuel prices came crawling like death into the night, unwanted and unannounced. So the next time you go to the pumps you will notice that the price for a gallon of Premium fuel went from $10.85 to $10.98 as it saw an increase of .13 cents. Regular went up by .18 cents and now sells for $10.64 while diesel saw an increase of .3 cents putting the new price at $10.12 per gallon. Kerosene is the only fuel that saw a reduction of .23 cents and now sells for $7.84 per gallon.

Today we found out that drivers were unaware about the rise in fuel prices.

Mr. Reyes- Fuel Consumer

"Fuel prices all the time it goes up, it goes up like today and tomorrow it comes down one cent the next day they put on ten, so it doesn't make any sense and that pressures ever body from poor to the rich it pressure and that is my comment."

Mr. Guadalupe Copo- Fuel Consumer

"No I did not know that the fuel prices went up."

Jose Gonsalez-Reporter

"As a Consumer how do you feel that the gas prices went up?

Mr. Guadalupe Copo- Fuel Consumer

"I guess it is affecting us a lot."

Mr. Acosta- Fuel Consumer

"Tiene tiempos que suben y en veces que baja pero dicen que los gobiernos lo sube y no sabemos como esta. Me siento muy mal porque nosotros mas consumimos mas y sin las maquinarias que no se mueven no podemos hacer nada y siempre tengo que comprar diesel y aunque suba siempre tenemos que comprar y no podemos hacer mejor."

Fuel Consumer

"It doesn't suppose to go up but at the same time I guess that the crude outside suppose to expensive that's why and we cannot blame our prime minister for that."

As in several other occasions the increase was not announced by the Barrow Administration.

Price of fuel at the pump going up

There is bad news for drivers tonight because a fuel price hike will take effect at midnight. Premium gasoline will be going up by thirty-two cents to be sold for eleven dollars and twenty-two cents. Meanwhile, the cost of regular fuel will increase twenty-seven cents to ten dollars and eighty-two cents. And diesel, which remains the least expensive fuel, will see the biggest increase of forty-five cents. The new price will be ten dollars and forty-nine cents. You still have a few hours to head out to the pumps before the higher prices kick in.

Fuel at the pump up again

The cost of living is one of the biggest factors for voters going into elections. Well, that's gone up more because to start the work week, drivers were greeted with a hike in prices at the fuel pumps that took effect on Sunday night. Today premium gasoline is selling for eleven dollars and fifty-eight cents, reflecting a thirty-six cent increase. Regular also went up thirty cents, bringing to the price to eleven dollars and twelve cents. Meanwhile, the price of diesel saw a miniscule four cent decrease and is now at ten dollars and forty-five cents. The first price increase of the year was less than a month ago on January seventeenth.

Fuel Prices Increase For The Third Time In Less Than A Month

In these days when the price for a gallon of fuel is above $10.00 and the cost of living is sky high, owning a vehicle has practically become a luxury. And if previously you found the need of parking your vehicle at home and only using it when necessary, then tonight there is more bad news for consumers. On Sunday, without the knowledge of Belizeans, fuel prices saw yet another increase. Yes, you heard right fuel prices increased for the third time this year.

This means that consumers will need to dig deeper into their pockets in order to purchase a gallon of fuel. The new prices are as follows: regular jumped from $10.91 to $11.21 as it saw a 30 cents increase. In the case of Premium gas it saw an increase of 36 cents as it went from $11.30 to $11.66. Diesel on the other hand saw a minor decrease of .4 cents putting the new price at $10.53 while kerosene remained the same.

The first increase in fuel prices for the year 2012 was recorded on January 1st while the second increase was seen on January 17th.

Gas Increases uncontrollable- Government Playing No Part in Recent Spike at the Pumps

On Monday, February 27, 2012, we saw the end of a painful seven day stretch in which the price of oil increased daily on the international markets. There are many factors that impact the price of oil. Experts are pointing to the Iranian nuke crisis as the reason for this recent spike. Analysts say a standoff between the Western world and Iran over its nuclear program continues to keep oil prices high. Western nations have been trying to get international inspectors into Iran's facilities because of the fear that Iran is building a nuclear weapon. Iran continues to deny the claim and has threatened to disrupt oil supplies if action is taken against them. As a result, oil prices are at a 9 month high finishing at over US$109 per barrel last week. This has caused prices at the pump to increase across the world and as a country that imports gas, Belize is feeling the brunt of the increase. Since the price of gas has increased, the cost of getting the gas here has increased as well. It's a double blitz that has been passed on to consumers.

The government of Belize has no control over world oil prices and little control on prices at our local pumps. However, Prime Minister Barrow has already taken steps to ease the burden on Belizeans by eliminating GST on gasoline, kerosene and diesel. Instead of GST, a fixed Import Duty was implemented. Government's take at the pumps has not increased since the international oil price was at US$85 a barrel. In March of 2011, Prime Minister Barrow challenged the gas importers to implement a similar fixed take. They have not done so and therefore, they have benefited greatly from the increases over the past year.

There seems to be no ease in the near future and because of that, PM Barrow is already making plans to tackle pump prices. One of the first things that the next UDP government will do after elections is to invest in a national oil refinery. PM Barrow has already engaged the conversation and the initial projection is that it will take eighteen months to construct. Government will purchase oil from local producers and refine the product. The price will be far cheaper since Belize will no longer need to import the product. However, eighteen months is a long time to wait. In an effort to bring relief sooner, the government will identify locations for fuel storage tanks. Those tanks will be used to store fuel imported from Venezuela. It is likely that the Venezuelan government will sell Belize fuel at a subsidized rate. It will not be enough to supply the whole country but the fuel will supply all government vehicles. The savings that is experienced as a result will be passed on to Belizeans in the form of tax relief at the pumps.

Belizeans have been suggesting that government invest in a refinery for a couple years now and government has been exploring the option. One argument against the idea was that a refinery would only be profitable in the long term if we have a long term supply of local oil. There are a few organizations that are spending hundreds of thousands (maybe even millions) of dollars to see that there is no more oil exploration. They definitely do not have the interest of the Belizean people at heart. Investment in a refinery is based on the belief that there will be more oil discovered in Belize and it will be enough to supply the entire country and relieve us from the dependence on foreign fuel.

GOB says it will absorb fuel cost increase

Belize is scheduled for a fuel cost increase but GOB says it will absorb the cost. As a consequence of the continuing rise in world oil prices there will be a further sharp increase in the CIF prices of fuel products. The next shipment is due to arrive in Belize today 2nd March. The Government of Belize, has taken a decision to absorb the price impact by varying import duties on this shipment.. That decision will directly ensure that fuel prices remain at their current levels, but is only for this shipment; however kerosene will increase by six cents per gallon. GOB says it will review the cost increase when the next shipment of fuel arrives in country. In real terms, had government not absorbed the impact of the CIF price increases, it would have meant an increase in pump prices of gasoline and diesel by slightly over 50cents per gallon and 27 cents per gallon, respectively. The cost to Government of its intervention to save the public from the higher pump prices is estimated to be $1.5 million over the next four weeks. In the meantime, the GOB says it intends to urgently seek new sources of supply for imported fuel on more favorable terms.
