Hello. A group of us is coming to AC in April and I was reading about Placencia and some of the cayes like Laughing Bird Caye and Ranguana Caye. They look like beautiful places to see while in Belize. Can anyone offer tips or suggestions about seeing these places? Is it worth a day trip to go to any of them and are there day trips available from AC or would we have to fly to Placencia for a day trip to one of these cayes? Thanks for any input and advice. Looking forward to our trip.

You can't do a day-trip to these islands from San Pedro. They are lovely spots, but you'd need to be in Placencia to make such an excursion work.

If you want to see some fabulous cayes on day-trips from SP, you may wish to join a snorkel trip to Turneffe. It's spectacular out there!!

Thanks Diane. I appreciate the information. In your opinion, would it be worth an early flight to Placencia to take an excursion out to these keys or is Turneffe just as beautiful?

Both sets of islands are beautiful. They are different and I could not pick a favorite really.

Turneffe offers reef and some fabulous dive and snorkel sites. It also has the inner lagoon where I've seen pods of dolphins and some creeks lined with blooming orchids. It's magical.

Ranguana and Laughingbird are classical "Perfect" tiny little desert islands right by the reef with wonderful under-water experiences ......

I'd check the transportation and cost and time details and pick the one that is most convenient - either destination would be a memorable experience.

Bringing my cousin on vacation to celebrate her 50th. Want local, quiet with outstanding pampering and of course, the perfect beach! Not too big on loud night life. Does it sound like I want it all? Of course! Can you please suggest a few pointers?

You might be interested in Coco Plum Caye. It is located just off the coast of Dangriga, you can take day trip there to get the local flavor and the beauty and quiet of Coco Plum can't be beat. The beach is also nice but the water is even better, and pampering..... they have that too.

For what it is worth, here is my opinion: stay in san pedro town, ambergris caye for part of the trip, caye caulker for part of the trip and then fly to punta gorda for part of the trip. I just left placencia on my current trip and felt like fit it mid-way on the san pedro - caye caulker spectrum. Punta gorda will add a totally new dimension to your holiday.

Placencia is a destination in and of itself, with the sea and water activities to the east and reef 19 miles from shore and views of the lagoon and jungle covered mtns to the west, with the 100,000 acre Jaguar Preserve with great hiking trails, waterfalls and river tubing less than a hrs drive; Mayan sites in Mayan villages; caves, zip lines, horses and wildlife. Placencia is a peninsula and is about 12 miles long and has nice hotels, inns, restaurants and shops. The village is quaint and welcoming. Placencia is an old Creole fishing village; Seine Bight a Garifuna village and lots of odds and sods in between and further up. Less developed than Ambergris, different type of beach, walk in swimming and more laid back. Whale sharks are present 3 days before and up to 10 days after the full moon in March, April, May, June and congregate 26 miles off shore, 6 miles beyond the reef. Humbling to see while diving or snorkeling, if they are present when you are there.
