VIDEO: Beach reclamation in Caye Caulker underway

Since early this year, the announcement was made that Caye Caulker would be having yet another beach reclamation after one that was done 12 years ago. Here is a report from Maria Novelo of Love TV/News:

Caye Caulker is going thru its beach transformation phase...

The new beach is in an area that both locals and tourists dont like or use and seems about 5 ft wider than it was before, until the erosion sends it back in the hole.
The real beach is the Split. The guy who rents the bar there was privately filling that for us all by hand with a min of damage to the environment.
I dont know him but I hope it brings biz to the bar.
Thanks to him from us all.
Chairman Villanueva stopped him after one day, but that did not fly with the villagers and they are still filling.

Vallanueva, yes the man I saw yelling "we will dump garbage wherever we want", after the last 'cleanup' which left piles of debris in front of the 'rich gringo' houses for over a month and he was asked by one homeowner when they would be taken away. I guess actually having the debris removed was an 'extra fee' to be paid by the 'rich' to Mr Villanueva, not part of the taxes they already pay to the council.

The beach at the Split

It is work in progress but we thought you might be interested to see that actual progression of the new beach at the Split before it is finally finished next week.

As you can see from above, the Western side of the split will be increasing the beach size by creating a protective wall and filling it with sand. The wall is built up using pimento (wood) and will eventually look much more natural than many sea walls around the island!

The sand is not obtained by the contentious dredger but brought in by boat loads from various locals dug from the back of the island. It has taken a painstaking week to get this far and therefore I would expect that completion would be next week we will have photos!!

Is there still an area for swimming or is the seafront now all seawall at the split?

There is a seawall across the northern point. It goes from where the old wall was to the point where the ROW comes on the west side. They have just installed 2 ladders for people to get in and out of the water. I'd post a picture but don't know how.

That is too bad...used to enjoy bringing some friends children there for a swim while mom and dad were working. Sounds like that is over.

Thank's Charlie & Marty
those pics are amazing,Immer upgrade the square footing around the bar,to offer the best to is customer, and also a real beach for late afternoon sunset view, regarding direct acces to water
we already have a plan to be made later,as you already know the split will stay number one spot in the island to interact with locals & tourist, and for the one thinking of Mr.Villanueva or city concil try to stop the working in progress this is not truth, the next step will be finishing the building and the split will get back is letter of nobility and what is more important bring back the familly atmosphere and the best quality spot for all resident of the island...
